I'm going with selfish a*shole. That Hedrick guy is right -- Davis should have done what's best for the team.

He's a disgrace to the Olympic spirit.

Lets compare him to john mcenroe. Mcenroe was a jerk and arrogant. However, when it came to being a team player there was no one better and more committed to the davis cup team and was a great doubles partner.

As someone that has always been a fan of players like mcenroe, deion sanders and rickey henderson, I think davis is a jerk and the hedrick guy is completely right.

Shani won Gold Saturday Over Tex Hedrick.Tex cried cause Shani wouldn't jeopradize his best shot at gold by helping Tex win more gold in a team event.(btw this team event was a first for speedskating-Eric Heiden won his five solo) I say good for Shani-why work all your life for a shot at gold then risk wearing down in a gimmick team event.
Only racist morons cant understand this. Hope Shani kicks more ass Tuesday. The Olympics have let to much nationalism enter the fray. US is the worst offender of this jingoistic crap and it is great to see US getting bit in the butt. Olympic Sport was meant to be about triumph and disaster and your response to it. The Shani's and Lindsay Jacobellis who realize this are what make sports great. The real story with Lindsay wasn't the fall but the subsequent rise and scramble to win silver.

Way to bring the conversation into the gutter. God forbid people have an opinion about a black person without being called a racist.

Wasn't Shani only given like 5 days notice that he was in the relay?

Or had he been practicing with these guys the whole time and then backed out last min?

I think there's a big diff between the 2. and 5 days notice about a relay event thats 2 days beofre what you've been training your whole life for would be low on my list of priorities as well.

I heard this guy trains in Calgary, don't think he practices with the US skaters.

He is a selfish prick, but nothing new when it comes to modern day American sports stars. "TEX" did his job by bringing up the whole issue it, probably cost Shani some endosement $$ down the road.

:finger: if all the facts are as reported and there wasn't another quality reason on shani's part then i think that's bullshit he wouldn't skate in the relay....it's a 30 second relay , how much is it costing his training....everyone else in the history of events comparable has done it....olympics is for your country...under medal standing it doesn't say shani davis 1 gold it says usa...prick

Shani reminds me of Carl Lewis. Also one of the best ever at his sport but never cashed in on the endorsement dollars because of his perceived prima donna attitude. Or it could have been advertisers suspected in retrospect he was doping but just never got caught.

Concerning perception, a Barry Bonds comparison could probably be made as well.

I just listened to local sports radio show and they were talking about. He wasn't originally on that team so I don't understand people who blame him or call selfish. Dude has been working his ass off for 4 years to win the gold and he did his part.

carl lewis won 2 gold medals in the 100 relay. And would have won 3 if not for a disqualification. I have no problem with shani's attitude, i have a problem in him not trying to win as many golds for america as possible.

all this BS about not giving enough warning sounds like that ice skater weir's excuse about missing a bus. Its freaking speedskating, go out there and go fast and win a medal for your country.

I'm in agreement with Primetime. Even if he went to the relay without putting enough practice in because of the short notice and just did his best, for his country, in the spirits of the olympics, then people would appreciate his success. But, when you couple his team-last attitude, with his refusal to skate, with his refusal to practice with the team then the guy's nothing but a 1st rate jackass, albeit a fast-skating jackass.
