Well usually people don't get fired out of the blue so he may of been given a warning beforehand about what he was doing that would lead to he now being fired. You gotta tell him this has nothing to do with friendship or personal feelings that you have to do your job and you were told that he was being let go for "x" reason(s). If you friends needs anything, a future reference or what have you tell him you have his back as well.
