Joeybaseball MLB Runs Pool Rules:
Welcome everyone to the first annual Joeybaseball runs pool. I have run a smaller version of this kind of pool in the past but this is the first year I will try to make it a fun, large one like my joeyfootball pool.
RULES:
Entry Fee: It will be $50 an entry and each person can do a max of two entries($100).
What does that get you? Each entry gets you one MLB team for Round 1. If you go with the $100 you get two different MLB teams in Round 1. Difference is a 1 in 30 chance of winning Round One $$ and moving on to the championship Round 2 or for $100 you increase your chances 2/30 or 1 out of 15 chance of winning Round 1 $$$ and advancing to the championship Round 2.
What is a Runs Pool? How does it work?
Well for most of us, baseball is exciting but not a sport we watch on a daily basis or sit down and watch 9 innings every night. This pool gets you into the baseball season and makes you interested in at a minimum checking the final score of your team each day.
What will happen is you will be entered into a group of 30 entries. I will then pick out of a hat and each of you will be assigned one MLB team or two MLB teams if you went with 2 entries.
Lets say you do one entry. You get the Blue Jays.
Round 1 starts on opening day
To win the Runs pool you have to be the first person to have your team get each of the 14 different runs totals.
NOTE: Check out the attached sample spreadsheet on the site to see how it is set up
So each team needs their team to score the following runs totals
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 and Over 12
Opening Day the Blue Jays score 4 runs. You now cross out the 4 from your list. You no longer need the 4.
Next game the Blue Jays score 6 runs, you now cross off the 6. You no longer need the 6.
Next game the Blue Jays score 4 runs again. This doesn’t help you and you do not get to cross out anything.
Once again first person to have their team score all 14 possibilities wins Round 1, gets some prize $$ and gets to advance to the Championship Round 2.
This sounds like fun, but how do you allow more than 30 people into the pool if there are only 30 teams??
I am going to set up multiple leagues. On a first come first serve basis, I will be filling up divisions of 30 entries. First 30 entries are put into league 1. Next 30 entries I receive will be put into league 2. Next 30 entries will be put into league 3… etc etc.. Each league will be treated separately and each have their own winner of Round 1
So for example, if the Cubs wind up winning Round 1 then all the people with the Cubs in all the different leagues will win the Round 1 prize $$.
ROUND 2: The Championship Round
This is where the big prize will be won
All the winners of Round 1, advance to Round 2. So in our example, all the people with the Cubs would advance to play to Round 2.
If we have 3 leagues, then the 3 winners will get 10 teams each for Round 2 assigned to them.
If we have 5 leagues, then the 5 winners will get 6 teams each assigned to them in Round 2
If we have 6 leagues, then the 6 winners will get 5 teams assigned to them in Round 2
If we have 10 leagues, then the 10 winners will get 3 teams each assigned to them in Round 2
If we have 15 leagues, then the 15 winners will get 2 teams each assigned to them in Round 2.
If we have 30 leagues, then the 30 winners will each get 1 team assigned to them in Round 2
New teams will be picked out of the hat again for Round 2 and I will inform the winners of Round 1 when Round 2 will begin(most likely a day or two after Round 1 ends).
HOW WILL I KNOW HOW I AM DOING??
Probably 3-4 times a week I will email out the spreadsheet with the updates on where you stand. Remember to check to sample sheet on the site to see what the sheet will look like. It is very easy to follow.
WHAT IF I GET A BAD TEAM? AM I DONE FOR?
Absolutely not.. One might think you need the Yankees or Red Sox to win this thing. Couldn’t be farther from the truth. Your team doesn’t need to win their games..Only the final score counts. For the record, the Devil Rays won Round 1 last year.
NOTE: Only official game scores count. This means the game has to go at least a full 5 innings. If a game gets rained out in the 2<SUP>nd</SUP> inning and the score is 3-2 and the game doesn’t count as an official game then you DO NOT get credit for that score.
TIEBREAKERS:
What happens if two teams both finish all their runs needed on the same day?
If this happens, the tie breaker will be whosever team scores the most runs during their next game. Example: On June 29<SUP>th</SUP> both the Red Sox and Orioles both finish on the same day. Then on June 30<SUP>th</SUP> the Red Sox score 3 runs and the Orioles score 9 runs, then the Orioles win and advance. The extra day/days to break the tie are just for tiebreaking purposes. It is not extra days for other teams to try to catch up.
PAYOUTS:
Different payouts depending on how many leagues we get
If we wind up with 3 leagues (90 entries)
4500 – 10% for my admin and website fees = 4050
3 winners of Round 1 get 500 each = 2550 left
Round 2 Winner gets the remaining 2550
If we wind up with 5 leagues (150 entries)
7500 – 10% for my admin and website fees = 6750
5 winners of Round 1 get 500 each = 4250 left
Round 2 Winner gets the remaining 4250
If we wind up with 6 leagues (180 entries)
9000 – 10% for my admin and website fees = 8100
6 winners of Round 1 get 500 each = 5100 left
Round 2 Winner gets the remaining 5100
If we wind up with 10 leagues (300 entries)
15000 – 10% for my admin and website fees = 13500
10 winners for Round 1 get 500 each = 8500 left
Round 2 Winner gets the remaining 8500
If we wind up with 15 leagues (450 entries)
22500 – 10% for my admin and website fees = 20250
15 winners of Round 1 get 500 each = 12750 left
Round 2 winner gets the remaining 12750
If we wind up with 30 leagues (900 entries)
45000 – 10% for my admin and website fees = 40500
30 winners of Round 1 get 500 each = 25500 left
Round 2 winner gets the remaining 25500
VERY IMPORTANT: Unlike my football pool where people have up to the day before the season to get their entry fee in, the baseball pool is ALL ABOUT getting in early because in order for the pool to work we need the exact amount of entries of either 90, 150, 180, 300, 450 or 900 entries or in the extreme case if this gets very popular or in future years when this gets very big 1800 entries. So it will be a lot easier for you to guarantee yourself a spot if you are one of the first 180 entries because once we hit 180 entries for example, we have to get another 120 entries to hit that 300 mark to ensure you are in and so on. If we hit 300 entries and you send it in late you have to hope we get up to 450 entries in order to ensure you are in. And even harder if you send it in real late because once we hit 450 entries we will need another 450 entries to ensure you get in at the 900 entry mark
SO BOTTOM LINE is just because baseball is still a month and a half away, GET YOUR ENTRY FEES in ASAP, starting as early as today.
WHAT TO INCLUDE WITH YOUR ENTRY FEE:
With your entry fee, include your name for the spreadsheet and the email address you want me to email you the spreadsheet each week to. If you don’t want it sent to work then just give me your home email address. If you do the 2 entry max($100) you will be listed as Ex) Joey Ferraro #1 and Joey Ferraro #2 on the sheet
Way To Almost Guarantee You Get In:
If you work somewhere where people like to play these type of pools and have a lot of friends from home you can also get your own group of 30 people, email me or mail me a list of those 30 people or 30 entries(if people are doing 2 entries) and you can guarantee your own league with your buddies and coworkers and guarantee you don’t get shut out. This also guarantees someone you know will definitely win the Round 1 prize and have a shot at the larger Round 2 prize.
