The series is a sequentiall - you really don't want to pick up in the middle, although you can. Your best bet is to rent the mini-series premier, 1st season and beginning of second season. You can get the rest of the episodes from ITunes (or all of them if you're too lazy to rent them).
Why is this series great? There is a ton of character development, and the episodes build on each other (similar to Babylon 5). The special effects are great, but not the emphasis of the series.
Another intriguing part of the series are moral issues presented from a different angle. Current issues posited in the future, so things aren't as clear as the present.
