here is an update on the smaller conference tournaments

Nearly every conference tournament game in the mid-major ranks has one thing in common, whether it's a No. 7 vs. No. 10 opening-round tilt or a nationally televised title game: While the victor moves on, a loss means the death of a season for the vanquished.
Each game signals the end to four months of hopes and dreams, the closing of seniors' careers, perhaps even the swan song of a coach or two. A few of the ousted will be lucky enough to get an extra lease on life in the NIT (or even the NCAAs), but for the vast majority of these teams, each and every game from here on out is a matter of basketball survival.
Starting Championship Week with a proper three-bid bang on Saturday is a trio of small conferences (the Big South, Atlantic Sun and Ohio Valley) that will quietly start their tourneys this week. A couple of other leagues (the Horizon and Southern) will start eliminating teams this week as well, with first-round action at campus sites. Here's what to look out for in the first few conferences to drop hopeful pretenders and crown successful contenders.
big_south.gif
At the beginning of the season, the only questions in the Big South Conference were by how many games Winthrop would win the conference and how soon the Eagles would wrap up the defense of their crown. Because of some unforeseen events, the surprising answers were as follows: one, and the final day of the regular season.
Most of the shock has been provided by Coastal Carolina (18-9, 12-4). The debut of Buzzball On The Coast was a wild success, as first-year coach Buzz Peterson used BSC-best 3-point shooting (37.5 percent) and ball control (1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio) to dig his team out of a 2-4 league record in January. Coastal strung together 10 straight wins -- one of only five active double-digit streaks (joining George Washington, Gonzaga, Duke and Memphis). Along the way, the Chanticleers showed the defending league champs the wrath of the Big Teal Chicken with a home-and-home sweep.
As for those Eagles (20-7, 13-3), you wouldn't like them when they're angry. After each of their three league losses, they won their next game by an average of 22 points. And in BracketBusters, Winthrop played valiantly against a hot-shooting team from a league several rungs up, defeating Northern Illinois of the MAC 98-97 in double overtime. The Eagles will have home-court advantage throughout the campus-site tournament, and nothing that's happened so far has diminished their status as the team to beat.
Also worth watching: Perhaps more surprising than Coastal's rise is that of Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers and their high-octane offense (1.15 points per shot, 21st nationally) led the league race when Winthrop began to falter. With 19 overall victories, they're a Tuesday win against No. 6 seed Charleston Southern from making the Big South a league with two teams with at least 20 wins; if CCU makes Saturday's final, that would make three -- as many as the ACC currently has and one more than the Pac-10.
atlantic_sun.gif
On Thursday, the Atlantic Sun Conference kicks off its tourney at the home of No. 5-seed East Tennessee State with a full slate of quarterfinal matchups. The top seeds belong to the teams that have been fighting it out at the top of the charts all season -- the pair of A-Sun representatives from Music City. Belmont and Lipscomb split the regular-season championship (and their season series) with 15-5 records and had to be separated by tie breakers.
The two squads play opposite styles, echoing the two forces that struggle for control of the soul of country music. Belmont is a new-school Nashville hit machine -- 81.5 points per game and fifth-in-the-nation 49.9 percent shooting -- but its defense (the 76.8 points allowed per game is 18th worst in the nation) means leads can have all the staying power of a Jo Dee Messina single.
Lipscomb, on the other hand, plays for those who pine for the days when Merle and Hank ruled the honky-tonk. The Bisons (yes, with an "s") are not glossy or slick; they get their point across with three solid chords (33.6 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, 7.7 steals per game) and their league-best defense (.956 points allowed per possession) has put a lot of tears in opposing fans' beers.
Also worth watching: Matt Doherty's Florida Atlantic squad (15-12, 14-6) went into its final regular-season weekend with a shot at the No. 1-seed, but had to settle for No. 3. Stetson, led by the man with the longest surname in D-I (7-foot-1 center Chief Kickingstallionsims), is the league's hottest team. The Hatters have won eight straight to draw the No. 6 seed with an 11-9 mark; with their losing overall record (13-17), are they this year's Oakland? And hats off to Campbell, which went 9-11 in league play and will appear in Johnson City as a No. 7 seed. After finishing 0-20 in A-Sun play last season, the Fighting Camels may end up posting the best single-season improvement in D-I in 2005-06.
southern.gif
There's no doubt that the Southern Conference has had a disappointing year overall. Once the playground of Duke and Carolina -- and more recently the home of strong NCAA representatives East Tennessee State, Charleston and Chattanooga -- the 85-year-old league slipped into the bottom 10 in conference RPI.

But there's no disappointment to be found at Georgia Southern (20-8, 11-4), which is enjoying its first-ever overall tourney No. 1 seed. The Eagles won the SoCon South on the strength of national-class 3-point shooting (40.0 percent, 13th in D-I) and world-class speed (76.3 possessions per 40 minutes, 16th in D-I). They'll go into the longest-running college basketball conference tourney in America (since 1922) with eight wins in their last nine games and an automatic NIT bid in their back pocket.
The league's promotions department says, "Before you go to the Big Dance, you've gotta do the Charleston." And if Davidson has learned anything recently, it's that teams that stumble on the SoCon season's second step aren't going to the NCAA Tournament. If the Wildcats want to avenge last year's perfect regular-season record and semifinal loss, they will have to do it from a No. 3 seed. Despite having the league's best RPI (112) and clobbering Georgia Southern in their first meeting (83-58 on Jan. 21), their 76-73 loss to GSU last week relegated them to second place in the division.
Also worth watching: By virtue of winning the somewhat oxymoronic Southern Conference North division, Elon (14-13, 10-4) earned the tourney's No. 2 seed. That the Phoenix were able to do so despite having the second-worst offensive efficiency in the league (.956 points per possession) and more points allowed than scored (67.6 PF, 68.6 PA) speaks volumes about the sad state of the SoCon this year.
ovc.gif
On the other hand, the Ohio Valley Conference was Hoops Nation's feel-good league this season: Seven of the eight tourney seeds finished the regular season over .500, with only Tennessee-Martin coming in with a losing league record (9-11). With the league's three loss-absorbers (Eastern Illinois, Southeast Missouri and Morehead State) left at home, the higher four seeds will host quarterfinals on Tuesday and the four survivors will descend on Nashville for a semifinal doubleheader on Friday.
Despite all of the winning records, the primary reason this isn't a wide-open tournament is the presence of No. 1 seed Murray State (21-6, 17-3). Despite featuring only one player who averaged in double-figures (senior swingman Shawn Witherspoon, 10.5 ppg) the Racers have had a sterling season; they've compiled win streaks of four, five and 10 over the course of the year, and severely tested Cincinnati and Tennessee back in November. The Racers score at least one point on 54.2 percent of their possessions, which places them at No. 12 nationwide in the obscure statistic of floor percentage.
Should Murray stumble, the OVC would be well served by Samford as a representative. The 2005-06 Bulldogs have given new meaning to the term "slow jams" -- they match a league-best 48.6 percent shooting touch (13th in D-I) with a clock-milking 57.8 possessions per game (only Princeton, Air Force and Richmond play slower).
Also worth watching: No. 3-seed Tennessee Tech (18-11, 13-7) will try to rally toward a championship behind head coach Mike Sutton. Since being stricken with the limb-weakening Guillain-Barre Syndrome last spring, he's returned to the sidelines with the help of a motorized wheelchair. The second-hottest team in the league has been run-and-gun No. 4-seed Jacksonville State (15-12, 12-8); the Gamecocks have won nine of their last 12.
horizon_league.gif
Because of a relatively complicated staggered-bracket system necessitated by the Horizon League's nine-school membership, defending league titleholder and No. 1-seed Wisconsin-Milwaukee has a bye into Saturday's semifinals, where the Panthers will face the survivor of a four-way tussle between the Nos. 4, 5, 8 and 9 seeds. No. 2-seed Butler also has a free pass into the semis, where the Bulldogs will play No. 3, 6 or 7 on Milwaukee's home floor.
While erstwhile leader Bruce Pearl is off working miracles at Tennessee, Rob Jeter has stepped in and led the Panthers to a 19-8 (12-4) record -- good, but not quite at-large worthy. If any squad is positioned to topple the champs -- the only mid-major to make the NCAA Sweet 16 last year -- it's Todd Lickliter's Bulldogs (18-11, 11-5). Butler is ninth nationally in offensive efficiency (110.5 points per 100 possessions) and its 60.3 points allowed per HL game was by far the best mark in the conference.
Also worth watching: In order to fill out the bracket, the conference had to unravel a thick clump of 8-8 teams. At least it didn't come to a shoe-size tie breaker or anything; Wisconsin-Green Bay had a 5-3 record against the other four, so UWGB gets a pass to the second round with the No. 3 seed. The unlucky team out was No. 7 Wright State, which posted a 3-5 record against the .500 bunch and has to drive up to No. 6 Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday to play a team that swept it in the regular season. Sorry, Raiders, them's the breaks.

No Missouri Valley games on T.V.? I know in the past, at least the championship game was on ESPN. I even remember seeing a semi-final game a couple of years ago. Maybe some of the games will be on ESPNU, which I don't have. :icon_conf

Fox Sports Midwest will cover the tournament beginning Friday with the quarterfinals, out of luck for the two Thursday games.

Brock, thanks for the post. I forgot to include that in my first reply. Hopefully a local sports bar will be able to pick up the quarter and semi-finals.
