UK Press Assoc:

Carling Cup champions Manchester United are close to signing a world record £60 million shirt sponsorship deal with online gambling company Mansion.

Details of the agreement have yet to be finalised but the club is reportedly confident that the deal will be completed by the end of the current season.

If the rumoured £60 million figure is correct it would mark the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in football, surpassing Chelsea’s deal with Samsung and Real Madrid’s with BenQ Mobile.

Manchester United’s current shirt sponsor, Vodafone, put a premature end to its £9 million-a-year deal with the club.

Gibraltar-based Mansion offers gamblers the chance to bet on a range of sports including Premiership football and the American Football and basketball in the US.

A possible stumbling block for the deal could emerge as Manchester United’s new American owners, the Glazer family, also own the American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

American football clubs are prohibited from any ties with betting companies and the deal could spark scrutiny from NFL bosses in the US.

Manchester United is also understood to have held sponsorship talks with mobile phone network O2 and Gulf-based airline Air Etihad.

I hope the deal goes through! It would bring much needed liquidity to the exchange! But where the fu** does Mansion get that kind of money from?

Mansion is upping the ante to become huge. They must have been, and are, doing something right. It always helps to start with a practically endless bankroll. :pope:

ok i'll bite...how does this make the exchange any better..?

More advertising > more customers > more liquidity > better odds and better chance of getting your own offers accepted.

yes in theory but advertising on Man U shirts will do little for north american sports......but people are talking as if this has done something right now to improve it today.......I do find it funny as it only highlights the difference the UK government and US government approach to online gambling.....

It also makes a good statement about corporate stability, compared to many offshore places where we have no evidence thereof..

Plus, who says you have to bet only US sports?

I'm sure there are more than a few people who bet on North American sports among United's millions and millions of fans around the world.

Who causes about American sports in the big picture its just a part of overall market place just as American sports isn't the world and I would say it doesn't count for the bulk of Mansion business anyway.

I have yet to meet someone who has money that didn't come from mommy and daddy who is a moron. Man U is at the very least a top 3 soccer club world wide with millions of fans. Every week during the highlight shows the Mansion brand name is going to be plastered right in front of the Man U shirt. You can't buy that type of exposure in traditional media outlets. Plus Man U jerseys are one of the highest selling jerseys worldwide so whoever is wearing a Man U jersey is now a walking billboard for Mansion. This is a brillant move by Mansion even if it doesn't create a dent in the North American market. Cause it will in Europe and Asia

Interesting...but a corporation operating in multiple jurisdictions should follow the law in each jurisdiction.

"American football clubs are prohibited from any ties with betting companies and the deal could spark scrutiny from NFL bosses in the US."

So does the NFL have control that affects Premier League Clubs. I think not.
