Saw him when he first came up and still shake my head every time I see this mutant on the mound. I believe if he wanted to hang around baseball and try his luck in the bullpen, he could pitch effectively into his fifties. Roger Clemens.

hard to argue against koufax or gibson. i personally think that greg maddux has to be on the list. the stretch he had in the 1990's when everyone was on steroids and ballparks were getting smaller, was unreal. his era was so much lower than the league average, it was sick. and, he is not a power pitcher which makes it even more impressive.

It's all a matter of perspective. When I was growing up the "modern era" was anything after World War 2! I sometimes wish I had been able to see Cy Young pitch. But then I remember that I would be dead.

ill give ya that. statistically mclain was crazy in 68. but I never saw him pitch so he dont count to my personal skewed opinion , im biased! how high was the mound in 68? what kind of pitches did he have ? ill always be partial to gooden for several reasons that dont show up in the numbers. and i think in a perfect world he could have done that for years unlike some of the 1 yr wonders in the past 20 yrs like scott, saberhagen, cone, etc.

but yeah, ill agree, mclain in 68 was most dominant season on paper

Excellent discussion. I'll list a few pitchers I feel are/were the best given a certain setting:

Best pitcher if I had to win one pressure game: Bob Gibson

Most unhittable on his best day: Nolan Ryan

Best over a long career: Roger Clemens (could also make a strong case for Warren Spahn)

Best one-inning bullpen pitcher: Dennis Eckersley

Most dominating end-of-season/post-season: Mike Scott, 1986

billy wagner at his peak 99 was pretty unhittable and a great 1 inning closer. eck cost me money a few times and i hold grudges:)

ryan is for sure the one id most like to watch pitch at the ballpark just to hear the mitt pop

Oh, man, I had forgotten about Hershiser in '88. He was something else. That'd be a close call for me.

Nolan Ryan was the most fun I've ever seen live, because every time he took the mound there was always the thought in your mind that you might see one of the most amazing performances ever.

I'll also nominate Ryan for title of "Best Ass-Kicking of a Young Third Baseman" for him taking Robin Ventura to school back in '93.
