The boy was part of a school group from Holly that visited the museum on Friday, officials say. They say he took a piece of Wrigley's Extra Polar Ice gum out of his mouth and stuck it on Helen Frankenthaler's "The Bay," an abstract painting from 1963.
The museum acquired the work in 1965 and says it is worth about $1.5 million.
The gum stuck to the painting's lower left corner and did not adhere to the fiber of the canvas, officials told the Detroit Free Press. But it left a chemical residue about the size of a quarter, said Becky Hart, assistant curator of contemporary art.
The museum's conservation department is researching the chemicals in the gum to decide which solvent to use to clean it. The museum hopes to make the repair in two weeks and will keep "The Bay" on display in the meantime, she said.
"Our expectation is that the painting is going to be fine," Hart said.
Holly Academy director Julie Kildee said the boy had been suspended from the charter school and says his parents also have disciplined him.
"Even though we give very strict guidelines on proper behavior and we hold students to high standards, he is only 12 and I don't think he understood the ramifications of what he did before it happened, but he certainly understands the severity of it now," said Kildee.

Then I'd hazard a guess that he, or his parents are mentally retarded. 12 year olds are consient human beings.

How do they let them get close enough to do this? I mean, I'm guessing he didn't heave his gum at the painting. He probably walked up to it, did it, and nobody even saw it happen.

You can thank your Britney Spears and Burger King self serving attitudes for behaivor like this.

Also parents who let their awful kids get away with everything and make them think they can do no wrong.

I once more will say if you teach kids life and working skills in high school maybe we wouldn't have so many people who care about nothing and maybe we'd have less kids in crime and being productive.

All kids from my generation want is a shot and to be paid attention to, but most don't want to work for anything. They want things handed to them.

You know life is down when you have a marijuana deal go down in your afternoon chemistry class 4 years ago in high school when I was in 11th grade.

My attitude growing up was I have to work for things if I want to get somewhere, but my dad was a doctor and mom runs customer service for a bank and both have college degrees.

I admit I was portrayed a teachers pet in high school, but I just behaved and did my own thing and had respect for things that weren't mine.

This just goes to show that historical art needs glass over everything because there is always a bad apple wanting to ruin it for everyone else.

It means that the majority of kids and parents in this country are TRASH.

If you fail to understand this, you probably fall into that category.

I don't totally disagree with your post. In fact, I agree with most of it. But blaming Britney Spears and the Burger King for such actions, seems like a reach. Want to blame society, then go ahead. But if your were a junior in high school just four years ago, I doubt you're a parent. And if and when you do become a parent and your kid or kids screw up, look up this post. Because if your kid screws up big time, your neighbors will be saying the same stuff about you, as you have said about Britney and the King.

Beat up? Never. I was never touched.

I mean look at the kid who ate McDonalds every day. Then he chooses to sue them for being fat? That's all I am saying in that sense.

As far as Britney Spears is that there were literally girls 18 years old I knew in 12th grade who thought she was the world. I mean it's kind of like umm you know. Get a real role model.

I am not saying that people mess up because we all make mistakes, but when I grew up I was always told don't touch things or mess with things that don't belong to you.

Maybe this kid is just a rotten apple or he didn't care, but if he was that type of kid it's only more of a reason to watch over him when going to a place like that if he had a history and even if he didn't some of these things are priceless.

We could also blame the museum person not watching the sceurity cameras if there are any or physical security if you want to look at the other side too

THIS IS WORTH 1.5 MILL?? Wow what a nice ink blot.

Who assigns the 'value' to these things? Anyone with kids most likely has better looking art hanging on their refrigerator door

I was a kid and i was never that stupid. I hate it when people say things like "boys will be boys" or these kids were too young to understand. My 1.5 year old understands it when i say no.

2-1 this kid has retarded parents.

I agree primetime. Even kids need to take responsibility for their actions by a certian age. I think 12 is old enough.

Yeah! I knew Hawkeye 171 when he was a kid and I don't believe it was Ma and Pa's fault for his transgressions, not that there were any. :lolBIG:

Why am I not surprised?

The parents will naturally blame the school.

I hate to say it, it seems like a good example of the youth of today.

Don't you love how people always love to blame others for their faults?
