Looking to purchase a new laptop as the Dell 1000 I use now is at the end of its day.

I've been doing some research online - reading reviews both by editors of tech/computer sites and users. I don't want to spend more than a grand and I see this Dell M140 that I can get for 799. It's part of the XPS line which I know is pretty high end for entertainment use. I wonder if its going to be enough or not enough for my use. Here is what I would use it for.
Web browsing
Poker - multiple sites/tables at once
DVD's - mainly just viewing but want the capability to write
Photos
Some games but not much

I'm probably leaving some things out but as you can see I don't need high end. I want something reliable and if I have problems, good tech support.

So do you think this would serve my purposes or should I look elsewhere? Thanks for any advice/input you can give.

I'm a big fan of Sony Vaio's....I absolutely love mine-and I don't like laptops, so that's saying a lot.

BTW-don't forget to check out our Computer & Tech Help Room. Lot of great advice to be found down there.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 8500. It's a little bit more out of your price range, but it's a nice computer and I've become a fan of Dells

If you're running XP, bumping the ram up to 1gb is WELL worth it. Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

TT - do you think I should just find one that offers 1gb as standard? If so, do you recommend any? I guess you recommended the Sony already so I'll start there.

1gb standard may be tough to find(easy upgrade at time of purchase).....the Vaio's are probably out of your price range anyhow.

When it comes to laptops, they all have a shorten lifespan that desktops and the price is primarily correlated to their weight. Stay aware from Fujitsu's, I've been to hell & back with some of their junk a couple years ago.

Any Dell is good. I have one for work, and I have never had a problem with it. Best pc on the market.
I bought a hp pavillion for personal use a few mths ago-it freaks out at least once every 4-5 days. HP currently on the do not recommend list.

Agree, Dell (Laptop / Desktop). Top of the line for the price. Can't go wrong.

Speaking about laptops. I love my laptop but hate to use the built-in mouse. Any chance I get, I use an external (cordless). Does anyone feel the same?

i used to use a mouse, but when i went wireless, it was a pain. if you use the touchpad for a while, you get used to it.

I'm a mouse user myself. I love the mini optical mouse that IBM has. Microsoft has one that's almost as small, but it a touch bigger.
