Top 10 Rookie mistakes I've made <HR style="COLOR: #fdde82" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->1-Not doing research on sportsbooks. I missed out on alot of money I could have been awarded through bonuses, comp. plays, better lines, etc.
-Betting too many games. Took a long time to figure out it's not the quantity, but the quality of the games I bet.
-No unit value. There was no method to my madness. Now, even when I'm losing, chances are it won't be as monumental as the swings I used to take. It's easier not to chase losses when you use a unit system.
-Impulse betting. I used to have no plan on paper of what I was going to bet. I had no idea there should be an overall strategy or goal for a day.
-Betting games because they're on T.V. I am a recreational bettor, but nobody likes to lose(what's the point). It's entertaining to watch a game on tv, but at the same time there is most likely a premium on the favorite in the game that other times there might not be.
-No goals. I figured out to make a profit I have to set goals. Daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, seasonal goals. I would be ahead 5 or 6 hundred dollars, but would eventually give it back because I had no overall goal.
-Exotic bets used to kill me. I found myself trying to hit parlays and teasers all the time. They eat up a bankroll fast when you don't win. It's hard enough to win a straight bet, much less a parlay. It's like good vs. evil though, you know you shouldn't, but say ahh what the hell! I still struggle with this today, but it's limited to 3 teams.
-Make withdrawals. I learned it's better to make a withdrawal and start over if you lose your starting bankroll, than to lose the whole thing because I felt powerfull. Later I was thinking about all the things I could have done with the money. Makes you feel like shit when you think about your wife and kids and their have nots after you've blown a huge sum of money.
-Put in the time. Don't take peoples word on a game, don't guess, don't steam. If I lose a bet after a well handicapped play, it's not a complete loss. It's stored in the memory bank until I use it next week, next month, who knows, maybe next year. Chances are I'll get it back.
-Don't become pre-occuppied with gambling. A few years back people at work used to call me a compulsive gambler. I realize they were laughing at me not with me. When I would take a break from gambling, I could see just how much time I was devoting to gambling and not my wife and kids. They only grow up once. Who cares if the Eagles win?
Hopefully this helps some people starting out, as well as refreshing to people in the game for a while. If you're new and just found this forum, you're years ahead of the game.
