when making a charging call at the end of a game like I just saw in the MD vir game....

The ref...Ran forward half way down the court like a idiot pumping to waive off the basket all hyped up

after seeing that I am convinced that the refs LIVE to make a call for the home team to get the place all pumped up as they think the cheers are for them and that they made a difference

that was hilarious if anyone saw that ref do that call:lolBIG:

Saw it, and seen it a million times before.

Not sure what goes through their head that they get all into making a call sometimes. A regular charge signal would do fine.

Never officiated basketball, but I would think it's hard not to feel the energy of the game and the crowd when making these calls. Can't really fault them. They're human.

Saw it, laughed, as the UVa player had got there late, and seemed to leave his feet in taking the charge(make sure he caught the slicing Md slasher) but got the call, as to give UVa a chance on Sr Day at home..

Md holds on..justice served.

hilarious:)

baseball umpires can get a bit animated at times too...wouldnt it be funny for once to see a NFL official emphatically call an offsides or something. he could get down and run his hand back and forth across the line of scrimmage while tooting on a whistle

Good officials (especially NCAA), do not get very emotional making their calls, so not to convey a "homer" perception.

However, quite often refs are emotional, and frankly, some of these guys are more mafia then Costra Nostra.

i like when the ball rollss on the rim and the stupid dipshit ref takes a couple steps forward just waiting to throw down the right arm i wish one would separate their shoulder..

in baseball collision at the plate the umpire waits then looks at catcher then like they have won the lotto throws up the out sign with authority.

a little devils advocate:

I have umpired in the smaller college baseball levels and we are taught to be loud and very sound in our judgements. Part of it is actually a show, almost to say, " hell yeah it is the right call." after umpiring for 6 years in little league through CC ball I try not to give officials to hard of a time. Sometimes (for instance the SB) it is hard not to, but honestly where would our sports be without these guys/gals. I usually get asked to umpire a tourney or two a year. It is good money, but if you get rattled easily it is not for you. Making it fun and getting into the game is one of the main reasons why I continue to give in at least once a year when I get a call.

besides that I did not see the call but I am sure it was quite humorous.

I don't have a problem with baseball umps on strike three, but these bozo refs with the charge call! Good call, some of the do look ridiculous! Basketball refs are the worst!

Being a basketball ref-I will not take offense. It takes a special kind of nut to do it-trust me.
Constant bickering and complaints from EVERYONE-players-coaches-fans. I could write a book on just this season alone-it is getting worse.
Just a little insight into a call like that. I did NOT see it-but it eneded a one point game so I guess it was close. Someone here said the best refs don't get emotional and for the most part that is correct. While everyone else is allowed to yell and vent and display emotions-refs can't. Your deamnor shows the confidence that you have. However, in close situations it is to the advantage of the referee to play to the importance of the call.
Example-on a play where a player makes a hoop and is fouled down 25-you will not see an emphatic "score it". However, a charge call that will decide the game MUST "COME OUT STRONG" or no one will believe it. Also, refs are human--a game with a big call coming at you WILL provoke emotions.
