I put it here so it gets viewed. I've been having problem with Toshiba M35X-S163. I almost always use it plugged in, as battery life is about long enough to take a dump in the morning, not much more.

I've seen many reports of this problem with a Google search. The screen goes dim and says low battery, so by jiggling the cord a bit, and twisting where the adaptor fits the laptop, it usually would work for a good while. The problem started getting worse, so I tried to research it and find a fix.

I decided to go to Radio Shack and get a new plug. I cut of the old one and spliced on the RS one, it's actually more touchy now. The new plug is kind of loose, more so then the old one. A piece of duct tape helps to jam it onto the computer tighter.

Since there are issues with Toshibas, is this likely a problem with the replacement plug or inside the computer.

It's out of warranty by a month or two, and I didn't buy extended coverage.

Any advice ?

Probably a bad socket in the laptop-and depending on how old the laptop is, fixing it may be more than the laptop is worth.

Actually under a year old ( 4/25/ 05) Should this be covered ? I didn't sign up for the renewal stuff that came awhile back.

They usually come with a 12 month warantee here..

I agree with the diagnosis, I got a three year warantee on mine, had it about 18months and it's been in for the adapter connection to be repaired 3 times (+ once for Hard drive failure)..

It gets almost continuous use..

It should definitely be covered-and I'm sure they are well aware of the issue. Send that baby in ASAP.

I'd prefer to return it Circuit City for a new one, instead of sending it off to Toshiba, and waiting.

Should I do something about the data on it, like reinstall the operating system, or other such precautions. I don't want to dump everything, then have CC say I have to send it to Toshiba. I don't want Toshiba to get all my info either.

What to do ?

You shouldn't lose any data, but considering who you're dealing with-I'd keep a copy of anything that would really hurt if you lost it.

With all do respect. Toshiba is one of the worst in the market. I purchased one last year and got rid of it approx. 30 later.

Has you mentioned the battery does not last at all.

What processor does yours have?

Most laptop batteries are crap-especially over time.

After 1 yr, good luck getting one to hold a charge......what a bunch of crap.

BTW--Don't forget that we have a Computer & Tech Help Room with some pretty sharp help there.

But is it a concern with info on hard drive if store would swap it ? Stuff like banking info, NT, etc ? Shouldn't I Delete everything before exchanging it, or even shipping it to Toshiba ?

Does re-installing OS do it, or do I have to do something else to wipe it clean ?

That is a concern.....I'd be tempted to back everything up, reformat the drive & reinstall the OS-THEN give it to them. Then again, I'm overly anal when it comes to my info floating around. It's bad enough with dirtbags mailbox shopping for CC info-let alone some 17 yr old having access to your NT or book accounts.

Exactly the way I'm thinking, don't want anything sensitive there. I guess the only option is going to be the same thing back ?

Fishhead: Didn't you just get a Toshiba recently ?

In addition, prior to sending it in for repair. Backup your info and run the following software. The free version allows one pass.

Just formating your hardrive doesn't always remove your tracks.

Doesn't this break the warranty?

My Toshiba has a habit of just shutting off. Cold. Happens whether plugged in or not. It blows when it happens in the middle of a poker tournament. I haven't done too much investigating as to what the problem could be, but it's annoying as hell.
