U.S. Baseball Team Could Be Eliminated
<!-- END HEADLINE -->
<!-- BEGIN STORY BODY -->1 hour, 59 minutes ago

The U.S. team could be eliminated from the World Baseball Classic if Japan loses to South Korea tonight.
Under the complicated tiebreaker system, the U.S. would be out if Japan wins in a nine-inning game and scores seven or fewer runs.
South Korea can earn a berth in the semifinals by beating Japan. If that happens, the United States would also make it by beating Mexico on Thursday.
Last night, Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed one hit in five shutout innings, and Japan beat Mexico 6-1.
Tonight's other game pits Cuba against Puerto Rico with the winner advancing to the semifinals against the Dominican Republic.
Last night, the Dominican Republic advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Venezuela. Baltimore Orioles pitcher Daniel Cabrera combined with three relievers on a one-hitter.

SS, the way I understand it is if Korea wins, USA needs to beat MExico to advance. IF Japan wins we need them to score more then 7 runs tonight in the process.

KOREA could save USA's asses with 3 more outs.

Korea - undefeated up to now - about to win AGAIN as a big dog and give USA a chance to advance by beating Mexico

I am worried how the Japenese will take it though, I would imagine this will be seen as a major embarassment to them. Nice game though to watch two teams play a whole game without any showboating, egomania or all the other stuff we get to see too often in the US

uh-oh lead off homer in the 9th by Japan, Korea up 2-1 now

USA IS alive as Korea holds on to win it 2-1.

Now if US can beat the Mexican team, they will move on.

Wonder if any of the US millionaires were watching this one. Korea has now beaten Japan twice so far! Supposedly the Korean team players may get out of the mandatory military service all Korean men have to serve if they make the finals (they are 6-0 so far) . Now that is some incentive to play for.

what an embarrasment, having to root for Korea.

This USA team is an embarrasment. Jeter would be just another good player if he played for any other team than the yankees.

The fact that the US is still alive in this tournament is a blemish on this event based on the way they have played. They have been easily the most underperformed team, even South Africa should be more proud than the US team. But lets just let the announcers keep telling us how this wouldnt be a tournament at all without Jeter in it.

memo to AROD: DR thanks you for playing for the US, not only are you a curse but Beltre has been immense in your spot. Besides AROD wouldnt have fit in with the team, guys like Tejada are dirt dog players, AROD is the biggest *** I ever seen for a great player.
