Sometimes I stand up and say that is not acceptable. And sometimes I punk out and say nothing. Even got in a fight one time with a guy over a stupid racist joke when I was on my high horse. And what do I do when I am the minority that is the butt of the joke? (BTW, I am White on the outside). Any suggestions?

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

thats a tough one because you could be wrong either way...by fighting or just letting it go...I have the same problem sometimes since I am a minority that is associated w/ some jokes...I just let it go most of the time

I think it all just depends, on who says it, where, the intent, etc. etc. stereotypes exist for all races and/or ethnic identities and/or national identities, be it black, white, Jewish, Armenian, Georgian, Russian, Ukranian, Cossack, Polish, German, English, Irish, Italian, etc. There's a time and a place for them I think, but if its malicious, then its probably out of line. its interesting, Irish and Italians weren't considered WHITE in this country until past the 1930s, so "white' is a bit of a misnomer.

What if you have no clue as to your heritage? Like, you or your relatives were adopted FD?

Tough call Captain.

Let me tell you a quick story.

years ago I was selling beer and was at a distributor meeting. about 50 people were attending. The head guy from the plant was giving a motivational speech and sliped in a jewish reference about not letting the retail store "jew down" the sales price. I held back saying anything till the next day.

I was sitting in the guy's office and he was kissing my ass as usual(since I was the national rep for the beer). I made the comment that I was very disappointed in what he had said the previous day at the meeting. He understood quickly and said that he was not trying to offend, had a lot of jewish friends and thought I was mexican because I speak spanish. What a schmuck.

I let it go but our relationship was never the same. I lost a lot of respect for the guy that I actually liked and enjoying working with him.

Unless they are talking about your mama, I just let it go.

Most of the time, I make sure that I do not laugh at all and try to keep a serious demeanor when I hear serious racism in a joke.... If it is a close aquantance, I may say something. If the setting is where I do not know the people well enough or if it is a large group discussion with many I do not know, I just do not laugh and keep a serious demeanor. Not much, but it is better, I believe, than getting into a fight.

However, I don't mind fighting verbally or physically if for some reason there is more involved than a racist joke. At some point we must stand up but sometimes the racist joke or comment is not the point where we must choose to battle. tulsa

Don't say anything and walk away. I've done it. Plenty of other jokes to tell.

Tough question. That really depends on the joke and how racist the comment is, who says it and who is he saying it to. I mean, how many times have I heard that my brothers had trouble leaving me behind? (Im Greek if you havent figured it out yet). Some people really dont mean any harm, yet some are real friggin racists.
If this is being said by an acquantance, its easy, never been seen with them again. If he ever asks why, tell him you dont want to be looked at as a racist like him.
If it is being said by a friend, take him aside and tell him what an asshole he is.

You're too right Tulsa.

Actually, I admired the guy. Harvard grad, football player, good looking and smooth talker. But, was an ignorant piece of sh%$. It goes to show, with all the education and benefits given, you can still have no class or education.

I like this site because we cannot see each other. Anyone can be of either sex, religion or color. Hopefully, one day, the world will be open to all, not just an elite few.
