Has US Horse Racing learned NOTHING from Offshore?

The industry complains that they need slots, etc etc to keep the public betting or whatever their complaint is as to why they need a mindless game like slots. BUT--if they want to bring in fresh $$$ and new bettors to the game don't they get a clue from the Offshores. And start to offer horse matchups?
Is the reason simply they fear negative pools or do they think it will corrupt their sport?
I just don't understnd their thinking...

Horse racing is a "grandparent" sport...As more of the old timers die off the worse off the "sport" is...

"grandparent sport"...Well that is very true I'm sure. But at one time it was all we had to bet and it may become that way again if the US gov. passes the Leach bill.

Regardless of what happens with the government's agenda; surely there is someone inside Thoroughbred racing that sees the attraction of horse matchup betting ? If it's simply that they fear negative pools, then that can happen at any time and they need to find a new approach. They seem to like the bingo type ideas and the lottery type idea. This does not offer much appeal. But horse matchups would.
Vegas gives the theory that they police the college betting scene when large bets are made....why not horse racing. I don't see that horse racing has a lot to lose. They have the government's blessing....where is the thinking coming from?
SLOTS??? Give me a break!

Whos,
I think you are coming from a gambling corner whereas the race tracks look on themselves as in the entertainment industry. Racing is an event which attracts people who havent a clue about betting, its all about the day out on different levels. In England not everyone can afford to go to Royal Ascot, so a Sandown night meeting will fit the bill for the Wife parading around acting like the in-crowd while the Husband informs everybody of his connections, actual betting is way down the list. :drink:

And I think you have zeroed in on it exactly! Entertainment as opposed to gambling industry. That had gone over my head till now, but you're correct.

England does not need other forms of gambling to help horse racing survive. Here in the US, seems it has come to that (or so they claim). The Brits must be glad to be rid of us American's.
