Iowa State coach Wayne Morgan "has been relieved of his coaching duties," an athletic department official told CBS SportsLine.com on Friday.
Iowa State has called a noon ET press conference to fire Morgan, less than 48 hours after a CBS SportsLine.com report raised questions about Iowa State's use of a company called D1 Scheduling the past two seasons to schedule nonconference opponents.
The Des Moines Register reports Iowa State is ex
pected to buy out the final two guaranteed years of Morgan's contract for a total of $1.5 million.
In three seasons under Morgan, Iowa State had an overall record of 55-39, including 22-26 in the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones lost seven of the past 10 games this season and were not selected for either postseason tournament. Under Morgan, Iowa State participated in the NCAA Tournament last season and the NIT after the 2003-04 season.
According to the CBS SportsLine.com report, Iowa State paid D1 $219,000 for six home games, but the Cyclones' opponents received only a combined $87,000.
"I have no idea what anybody did with the check that we administered to D1 Scheduling," Morgan told the Register on Thursday. "If someone wants to investigate this, and they find that D1 Scheduling did not provide in their contract that they would take care of all expenses for the teams, then obviously there are people with a lot of explaining to do."
Morgan's contract, worth $750,000 including outside income, was set to expire on June 30, 2010. The contract is guaranteed, at $750,000 per season, through July 1, 2008.
