It's some time since I visited Scotland.

Glasgow is certainly a more working class city while Edinburgh is better for tourist attractions.

Glasgow was a big shipbuilding centre before it became cheaper to do the work elsewhere so its quite industrial and still a major port. Think Newark and you get the idea of the place. Edinburgh is more of a cultural centre, has an interesting castle and has various festivals during the summer. To my mind you can find some of the world's best beer and taken the Scottish way "a pint and a half" goes with a scotch chaser.

Seriously, Glasgow has lost its tough label and I think its a better City than Edinburgh for going out eating, drinking and dancing. People are more down to Earth whereas Edinburgh tends to think its got some sort of culture, Sweaty Socks having culture, now there's a laugh.:drink:

Scotland is steeped in history so there are some fascinating spots in both cities and they are only an hour's drive apart. They are very different to other cities and main towns. Perth is the Gateway to the Highlands; from there you can travel North, East or West and they are like different countries

Edinburgh is the capital city. Glasgow is larger. Both beautiful cities but Edinburgh is striking. Incredible architecture set against the backdrop of the castle.

If travelling in the summer, visit Edin while the Fringe and Festival are ongoing... try now to get tickets for the Tattoo (military base show); regiments from over the world come, there are incredible displays, dancing, bagpipes, etc... It's fantastic, wonderful atmosphere and the city packed with visitors and locals....street acts everywhere, incredible number of shows on in all sorts of venues. The standard of the exhibitions are incredible, it is very atmospheric and finishes with fireworks display after the lone piper finishes off the show standing on a rampart of the castle.

Glasgow is a fun city. Some lovely places to visit and really interesting things like the Glasgow School of Art and Rennie Mackintosh works, the People's Palace and the Glasgow Science Museum, etc. Some wonderful theatres and concert halls.

If you have time and like history... or whisky, there are 2 trails: the Castle Trail and the Whisky Trail.

There are Tourist Information Board sites. You may search for links and you will be able to find lots of information.

Enjoy it!

i was flying from frankfurt to new york last year and the microwave in the galley caught fire so we had to stop in glasgow...

ended up staying almost the whole night at the airport...and they put out all these free phones for us to call family to let them know we were delayed...

i was so pissed about being delayed i used those phones for like 6 hours calling every person i knew, all over the world. i can only imagine the phone bill i rang up. i was calling people in south africa, australia, chile, the further away the better! ha ha i was calling everyone!!!

i realize this post isn't really relevant...but technically, i was in scotland.

Scotland

Very nice country great culture but like every said sometimes they are hard and I mean hard to understand. Been there a few times to play golf tournaments when I was younger. I remember my second time there I got this local caddy and I had no clue what the old guy was telling me, all I did was laugh and he laughed with me. I remember the family I stayed with made this traditional food where its like good in the stoamch of an animal that stuff was nasty I cant remember the name of it maybe someone knows what it is?

OUR BELOVED HAGGIS!
The National Dish of Scotland

Haggis is one of those national dishes that is both beloved and reviled by natives, and sometimes horrifies people who hear it described for the first time. It even horrifies native Scots -- my teacher and graduate advisor Ian Conner, a Glaswegian, was appalled that I had actually eaten this stuff whilst in Scotland. "I hope you had lots of whisky with it, at least!" he said.
I had my haggis in Edinburgh at a lovely little restaurant near the train station off of Princes Street. It was not unlike a Scottish version of boudin, with oats instead of rice, or perhaps more like a Cajun dish called paunce, which is stuffed pork stomach. It was actually pretty tasty, particularly when I zinged it up with a little Tabasco (I always carry a little bottle when I travel), and washed down with a pint of McEwan's Export and a wee dram of single malt Scots whisky.

So, for your Robbie Burns Day celebration, you might have a hard time finding a haggis here in the States (it's difficult to get them imported too; I understand that the USDA has declared them "unfit for human consumption" ...). Now you can make haggis yourself! Here's a recipe I picked up, as posted to the Usenet newsgroup rec.food.recipes by Don Reid <don_reid@ccnet.com>, and reproduced with his kind permission:

Sandy Lyle served this at the Masters' Champions dinner the year after he won, to mixed reviews!

Let me know how it goes. We too are looking at taking the train ride to London. We leave in May.

Also, there are 3 casinos in Edinburgh. not sure if you can bet sports. The casinos are owned by Stanely casinos. I see they offer BJ, craps, let it ride, and some slots. I am interest in their BJ.

Again, post when you get back. Or email me at my screen name at yahoo.com.

YES, AND I HAVE BEEN TO BOTH OF THOSE CITIES. I HAVE FRIENDS FROM THERE, THEY LIVE BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES IN A TOWN CALLED AIRDRIE. THEY ARE ALSO OWN A CONDO IN CLEARWATER, WILL SEE THEM IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS WHEN THEY COME TO FLORIDA.

FLEW INTO GLASGOW FROM CRAWLEY (OUTSIDE LONDON). CAN DRIVE TO EITHER CITY, BUT TOOK THE TRAM TO GLASGOW. HAVE TO GO TO STIRLING TOO, VERY QUAINT AND ALL THE HISTORY THAT SURROUNDS IT. ALL THE PUBS ARE GREAT AND THE CITIES ARE VERY CLEAN, DID NOT LIKE THE FOOD MUCH, THOUGH. DRANK ALOT OF BEER!

Glasgow is more friendly than Edinburgh and is becoming the "in place" to be. It is quickly losing it's stigma of being a 'tough' city. If you want more information email me direct at fortisone@e-mile.co.uk. It really all depends what you want to do when you arrive.
