I cannot function unless I have my 3x5 index card on me. It is my daily planner, with every little thing I need to do on there. I plan my whole day on this little piece of paper. Without it I am worthless!!!!!

a couple years back i was incredibly bored and decided to open a microsoft word document and try to figure out my exact net worth...

i tallied up my bank accounts, stock accounts, bills and money owed, money offshore for gamling, etc. etc...it was just a way to kill some time.

then, for some reason, i went back the next day and re-tallied everything, factoring in whatever money i spent that day....

i never stopped doing it. each and every evening (after the games are done and the stock markets are closed) i figure out my exact net worth, right down to the very penny!

it's like a little ritual i look forward to every night...plus it's definitely helped me save money by seeing exactly what i spend each day (again, right down to the exact penny even!)

I admire your anal retentiveness Christian. I don't actually have a single clue where I spend all that money, it just flies away from me and towards others, then I reach out and grab large chunks back, only to see it vanish in thin air again...and I always make a plan as I go along.

really. I have had a microsoft money disc sitting next to me for 2 months. I think I may start that up now that cbb hoops is winding down. Any other pointers on this. Sounds VERY interesting.

actually i just used a wordpad, nothing fancy, and made columns like this:

BANK ACCOUNTS $XX,XXX
STOCK ACCOUNTS $XX,XXX
GAMBLING MONEY OFFSHORE $XX,XXX
CC BILLS -$XX,XXX
TOTAL $XX,XXX

that's it, just a couple lines of info, nothing more. and i update it each and every night. i check my bank accounts, credit card statements, brokerage accounts for stocks and offshore books and tally up the figures. it doesn't take anything fancy.

my net worth varies quite a bit day-to-day obviously (i'm a dime a game bettor so there are days i win thousands and days i lose thousands) but i love the feeling of being well-organized financially and knowing exactly where my money is, how much i have, etc.

most people have no idea how much they spend monthly, let alone daily. you'd be surprised how you can find ways to save money when you know exactly where all your money is going each day. and it only takes about 10-15 minutes per day to look up all the info at your bank, brokerage house and offshore books' websites each night.

have did something similar in the past with just a pen, calculator and paper. Every monday morning and compare to 4 mondays previous. Gambling really was the most erratic column. Orgainzation is the key. You can't go forward if you aren't orgainized

I'm a former index card fanatic that has "graduated" to a PDA. However, I still pull out an index card for an important project or a busy day sometimes. ( I forget where I bought them, but I was so into the index card that I actually had some made up with a heading and my company logo--it was like a business card) Best thing about the PDA is not having to copy the important things from today's card onto tomorrow's, but I miss that daily planning pause. I'm nowhere near as fanatical as some of those guys above, but I do balance my checking accounts online every morning.

i'm betting full-time now (with no other source of income except for my stocks and some investments) so i pretty much sit in front of my laptop for about 12 hours a day anyway. so it's not really all that hard to take a few minutes to figure out my finances each night.

plus, i like to track the big swings in bankroll that inevitably occur from day to day (and month to month). it definitely brings some peace of mind when you realize that you can lose 15 units in just a matter of days and you can also gain 25 units in matter of days (both of which have happened to me over the past year).

knowing this (and seeing it recorded in black in white in some sort of spreedsheet) can definitely prepare you for those horrible 0-6 or 1-7 days (and conversely, those great 8-0 days) that come along every now and then. it keeps things in perspective so you never get too down for a rough day or too happy for a great day. it's good to keep a level-head no matter how the day went. i prefer to take as much of the "emotion" out of gambling as i possibly can.
