Could Condoleeza Rice be Next NFL Commish?
http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,188554,00.html
Monday , March 20, 2006

WASHINGTON — Condoleezza Rice, a bona fide football fan, is not applying for the newly opened post of NFL commissioner -- not now, anyhow, her spokesman said carefully on Monday.

State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said he noticed the job opening right before his daily briefing.

"At the moment, the secretary is enjoying being secretary of state," said McCormack of his boss, an avid Cleveland Browns fan.

The wiggle-room in his response after NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced he would retire resonated off frequent only half-joking statements by Rice that as a lifelong football fan she aspires to run the league one day.

Speculation has been rampant that she might also wind up on the Republican ticket in 2008, though she has repeatedly denied any interest in running for president.

The owner of the New England Patriots, Bob Kraft, for one, seems to be in Rice's corner for the football post.

Kraft told CNBC that he had dinner with Rice a few months ago and found her to be "tremendously capable and highly competent."

"I am flattered that she is interested in joining us," Kraft said. "But, of course, I am only one of 32."

He served the NFL well in his tenure, even if he has the personality of an old shoe.

I dont like the job Taglibue did.

*He failed with Cleveland, he screwed the old dog pound. I know most of that was Art's fault. But Tags did'nt seem to help much.

*He was never able to solve the LA problem. One that had been around for years and years. Rams and Raiders both = out.

*All the crap about removing individuality. Sending uniform inspectors to the games. Towel and socks only so high. Yada Yada, simply rediculous.

*The no helmet rule, the no team celebration rule. The nerf on flamboyant celebrations. All that stuff is junk.

I couldnt be happier to see him gone, before he makes the leauge even more plain and less fun. Condi ain't the awnser either.

MORE FROM THE AP ON WHO MIGHT BE NEXT.
-------------------------------------------

Roger Goodell, the NFL's chief operating officer, and Atlanta general manager Rich McKay are the two leading candidates to succeed Tagliabue.

Baltimore Ravens president Dick Cass also is considered to have an outside chance and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has said she would like the job.

"Ask her," Tagliabue said when asked about Rice's candidacy, adding that the process is wide open and that he will stay on beyond July to avoid the kind of seven-month deadlock that occurred between him and the late Jim Finks after Rozelle stepped down in March 1989.

Owners will begin the search for a new commissioner at their meetings next week in Orlando, Fla.

Tags deserves heat for the LA debacle, if only cause the league keeps saying how important it is to get a team in there. But it's gotta be ownership that comes up with the No Fun League stuffs in my occasionally humble opinion.
