CWA Warns of the Dangers of Internet Gambling

To: National Desk
Contact: Stacey Holliday of Concerned Women for America, 202-488-7000 ext. 126
WASHINGTON, March 22 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Concerned Women for America (CWA) says that the increasing participation in Internet gambling, especially in light of the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, is illegal and presents a danger to those who participate.

“Internet gambling is an illegal and destructive activity,” said Lanier Swann, CWA’s Director of Government Relations. “People have bought into the lie that because it is done in the privacy of their own home, it is acceptable. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“We are encouraged by measures in the House Financial Services Committee to crack down on online gambling,” said Swann. The Committee approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Jim Leach [R-Iowa] which prohibits the processing of payments for Internet gambling by banks and credit card companies. The bill also makes it a crime for a gambling business to accept any type of illegal gaming transaction.

“This March Madness season is a time when many people are tempted to engage in this irresponsible ‘hobby.’ I encourage people to use wisdom and discernment before throwing their money down on their bracket of choice. It’s not ‘harmless’ to break the law.

“In addition to being illegal, online gambling harms families and is a waste of money and time. Families suffer due to excessive credit card debt. People isolate themselves from their friends and family, and instead spend their time gambling in solitude. Rep. Leach’s bill is a lifeline for these suffering families and we urge Congress to pass this needed legislation.

“The recent increase of online gambling must be stopped. People of all ages must realize that they are breaking the law every time they gamble money on the Internet. Hopefully basketball fans will enjoy the upcoming games and stick to rooting for their team and not illegally throwing down money through their computers.”

Concerned Women for America (CWA) is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.

A little background check on Ms. Swann............

Before joining the CWA team, Miss Swann served as principal speechwriter for Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina), where her primary responsibility included crafting the senator's floor statements, hearing statements, and speeches for public appearances. She was also heavily involved in preparing the senator for her multiple campaign trips across the United States.

Miss Swann began working on Capitol Hill in the office of Rep. Walter Jones (R-North Carolina), where she spent several years as Communications Director. She acted as the liaison between the media and the congressman, dealing with press from all over the world. Lanier handled the congressman's social and religious policies, including the Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act, Rep. Jones' chief legislation.

Key Points - Understanding HR 235
Above all else, HR 235 is about recognizing the need to return a stolen right from our nation's houses of worship. Prior to 1954, churches were free to speak out about any and every topic - without government limitations.

MS. SWANN,

Give the United States citizen the same CORTESY on what to do with their own money by fighting to make sure online gambling does NOT become illegal.

By the way Ms. Swann, a few questions for you.........

1. Will you be fighting to make lotterys illegal in this country?

2. Are you for banning tobacco sales?

3. Are you for alcohol prohibition?

4. Are you for lower Federal income taxes?

5. Do you believe in abortion?

6. What are you doing currently in the fight against higher unleaded fuel prices and do you drive a hybrid automobile?

7. Are you a vegatarian?

8. What is your contraceptive of choice?

9. Could you list ALL the chemical compounds in your home currently that you use on a regualar basis(clorine beach, EDTA, etc., etc)?

Thank you, may have more questions later.

Anyone observing the news and attitudes about gambling in America today would assume/expect some type of restrictions in the near future.

Those who are not, are basing their opinions on what they would wish to see happen and not on what is actually happening or likely to happen.

Plenty of articles discussing wage slaves betting games while on the bossmans dime & time.

In case people have forgotten, those folks signing the paychecks get a bit hot underneath the collar when the common folks are having too much fun on their time, and especially while also on their dime.

According to news over at Major's last week, I read where some internet companies (namely Comcast) had blocked their users access to gambling websites. They (Comcast would not admit to doing that saying it was some type of problem) But the users all said they were testing to see if it could be done should Congress pass such a law. They were sucessfull in their blocking.

If you think the religious right does not want to control your very freedoms in the US....just take a look at what was donated to ONE man's tv show (Pat Robertson's CNN Network in 2005....over $160 MILLION)
