with everyone worrying nowadays about the IRS and the possible future crackdown by the U.S. govt. of the offshore industry (which i don't believe will ever happen, but some of you are worried about it)

there's a simple fix for all of this. start doing all your banking offshore.

don't believe all the hype and all the movies....offshore banking isn't just for millionaires (or billionaires) or criminals and drug dealers.

although, the guy who taught me everything i know about offshore banking actually used to be a drug trafficker, ha ha, so go figure...

anyway, there are plenty of banks that let you open accounts for as little as $25,000 USD (usually less for british pound accounts, about the same for euro...25,000E or so)

you get all the benefits of regular u.s. banks....online banking, 24/7 customer service, credit cards, ATM cards, checks (if anybody still uses those nowadays:)

and you're out of reach of all u.s. govt. agencies (i.e. IRS)

the best offshore centers, in my opinion, are austria, luxembourg, liechtenstein, switzerland (although Swiss banks have the worst CS in the world unless you truly are rich) and isle of man

i've heard good things about banking in panama and belize from the guys who run the website escapeartist.com (a great website if you're into the whole expat thing), but i prefer european banks (longer, more established tradition of banking privacy).

i'm still amazed to see all these guys in the states who have $50k or $75k (or more) in their banks in f-in topeka, kansas...all the while, wagering thousands of dollars offshore or with bookies (and probably not paying their taxes)...

it's 2006...and this is a global economy fellas! you guys buy the most modern laptops and plasma tv's and cars and everything else but you still do your banking at the brick and mortar place on the corner of your town!

oh, if you want a site to check out to see what you can expect...check out www.sboff.com

and no, i don't work for that site nor do i bank there. but a close friend of mine runs an investment firm in dubai and she's always recommended that place to me (it's on the isle of man). personally, i prefer austria for banking.

Many other solid offshore banks that require much less to open an account.

Trust me some people do this and it isn't because they want to bet offshore. One can get an anonymous corporation in Panama and attached bank account for relatively small $$$ and be ahead of even what you suggest.

you've seen the EXACT same post???

well, if you're trying to accuse me of plagarizing something you better fucking post whatever it is you think you saw before.

i just wrote that post myself. and since i've been a member here (around nov. 2005) i've never seen anything on offshore banking.

don't fucking accuse me of posting someone else's post and putting my name on it.

you made the accusation, so the ball's in your court. you better do a search and find whatever the hell you think you've seen before and post it. cause i never stole it. i'll be waiting.

Agree. This option is very popular nowadays. It's not all illegal money.

Christian, it was a post around the time when all the bills discussion was going on, I'm going out now, I'll look for it later and if I don't find it, I'll appologize, don't worry.

absolutely, there is far more "legal" money than "illegal" money offshore.

granted, most people do it to avoid taxes...but the money was originally gained from "legal" sources. so to me, i consider it legal money....even if they end up breaking their nation's laws by avoiding taxes :)

anyway, i would recommend offshore banking to anyone who has the means to do it...even those who don't bet offshore. but for those that do bet offshore i ABSOLUTELY recommend they go offshore with banking as well.

For some people the first thing that enters their mind is drug money and the Cayman Islands, etc.. "To many movies".

no, no, no....it doesn't work like that. your account will be in the currency of your choice! usually u.s. dollars (for americans) but you can get swiss francs, british pounds, euro, etc.

yes, offshore banks transfer to and from offshore banks. an offshore bank to us (for example in vienna, austra) is the exaxct same bank that a local viennese austrian businessman would use.

it's only labeled "offshore" because it's outside of the u.s. you would basically be baking at bank of austria, for example. but you'd be living in the u.s. as opposed to a local guy who lives in austria who banks in the same bank and lives down the street from the place.

It has always been a sound decision for one to keep his money in more than one currency.

For those who think their money is 100% safe in US dollars and/or US banks...get out your history books and do some reading.

Scarab - I apologize, but I don't think this is a place to discuss offshore banks in details. Accept my apologies. Thanks.
