Donnie Brasco is a very good flick about an FBI agent (johnny depp) who infiltrates the mob and kind of gets caught more in the mob life than his regular. Al pacino also in this movie...very good flick IMO

also along the same "theme" line as godfather are two of my more favorite movies....

Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman is a fabulous movie. Also Jude Law. This movie was directed by Sam Mendes who is a great movie maker (American Beauty). Highly recommend this flick JMAN. Newman should've won supporting actor oscar for this flick.

LA Confidential is another good movie from late 90s with a star studded cast...nominated for 9 oscars, won 2

Goodfellas

Probably as close to real contemporary mob life as any movie ever.

Another decent mob flick is "The Untouchables" - Robert DiNiro is excellent as a villianous Al Capone. Sean Connery (Best Supporting Actor Oscar) and Kevin Costner co star in the Brian DePalma film.

He said less known and all you guys got were oscar nominees and holywood productions?
There is a russian series - "Brigada", I'm not sure about the translation, if you can find it in English, well worth watching.
Give Layer cake(uk) a shot, it's nowhere near as good as some of the above, but it's above average...
I'm pretty sure I'd come up with a lot more of the international cinema after dinner. Will try and post here later.

More recent- Mean Streets

Glad you mentioned this one Judge. It's Scorsese's first "big" movie, but often overlooked. And it's not THAT recent. In looking at the box, it looks like 1973 was the release year.
