That was a very impressive defensive performance

All you guys are ripping on UCLA for winning ugly. The absolutely shut down one of the most high-powered offenses in college basketball. Playing fundamentally sound and well coached defense. Getting in passing lanes, staying in position, and blocking out their assignments.
Your average fan will say that was ugly and they suck, but anyone who knows about the fundamentals about the game can tell you they played that as perfectly as they could on the defensive end.

I still hate UCLA for blowing that Princeton game on the money line, but my hat is off to Ben Howland who coached circles around Mr. Slick, Calipari.

I can appreciate good defense from a coaching perspective. It looked ugly, but was the perfect gameplan against Memphis' athleticism.

It was a good defensive performance. However, this grind-it-out, low-scoring, defensive mentality only gets you so far in the tourney. Just ask Dick Bennett and his Wisconsin teams. That's why Ben Howland never made it past the sweet 16 with Pitt. The buck stops here.

Dick Bennett got Wisconsin to the freaking final 4 with an overmatched team in every aspect.
How can you say that is not an accomplishment?

Just the other day I said UCLA has the best defense of the teams left and possibly the best in the country. Told ya!

My point exactly. He got them to the final four, but no further. In other words, this is as far as UCLA goes.

Where in my post did I say that wasn't an accomplishment? What I'm saying is that it isn't good enough to get you 6 straight wins in the tourney, especially once you are up against better competition.

If Dick Bennett had won the championship with that Wisconsin team, they should have knighted him king of basketball, gave him his own wing at the Hall of Fame and named a coaching trophy after him.

There is zero comparison between the talent on that team and the talent on UCLA.
UCLA has some great talent, but Howland has them playing like a TEAM. You forget how good Memphis really was because of this game. Go back and look at their record and their offensive output. Sure, Memphis played poorly but they had no chance against a smothering defense.

For a better reference look at Maryland the year they won. Solid fundamentally, everyone knew their roles and two backcourt guys that could control the game (Blake and Dixon compared to Farmar and Afflalo).

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Both teams really played a good defensive games, much lower than I thought. But I can't say that I was that surprised. Houston, which was up there defensivly..held them for the 1st half of both games. Ucla and Memphis both shot badly and its going to be intresting to see how far UCLA goes with that def they have.

How do you know that? Did you watch them play that year? You can't say there is no comparison. Wisky went 8-8 in a tough Big 10 that year, and 18-13 overall.

this is wierd, I follow Wisky program pretty close and watching this UCLA team first thing that came to mind was when Wisconsin made it to the final four.

That was one of the worst teams in the final four in a while. Last one was Wisconsin, Remember reading a quote from the national press that said "it has been 60 years since Wisconsin made it to the Final Four and I hope it is another 60 years".

UCLA looks like that Wisconsin team.

Memphis was so tight tonight had a ton of open 3's that did not fall. Just to tight.

Also UCLA was a number 2 that was "kid gloved" and left out in their area.

So beating Gonzaga and Memphis is easy? That is kid gloved? UCLA has great defense and defense is real important in the tournament as ucla, george mason, and that wisconsin team have proven. UCLA may not win the championship, but they certainly have a decent shot at it.

Memphis was like 1 for 16 hitting three's.....If they played tomorrow, I
believe I would still play Memphis. Memphis has alot of talent, but I guess no heart.
