I quit playing online poker a few months ago, not because I think its rigged, simply because I want to be able to read peoples body language.

So I went to Baton Rouge on Saturday to play in some 2-5 nolimit.

I believe in giving tips, but I noticed that the tipping at this place got way out of hand. Every single time someone won a bet, no matter how small it was, even if it was just stealing the blinds. It seems like this casino had an unwritten rule that you had to tip the dealer.

If you won a hand where you only won $7(just winning the blinds) and you did not give the dealer at least $1 people looked at you funny.

Now once again I believe in tipping, but winning the blinds with a Jack 9 offsuit with a bluff IMO does not warrent giving the dealer a tip.

Deal me a fullHouse and I will make it more than worth your while, but if you have to give someone money everytime you win im out of there!!!!!

Am I cheep? I tip 25% to 40% when I go out to eat etc....... Not trying to get out of paying people but tipping for every winning hand is a joke.

Very hard to win at low limit live holdem(3-6 and under) considering the RAKE and TIPPING.

One has to be an EXTREMELY good poker player to do so.

It was no-limit. A few of the pots got into the $1500-$2000 range.

Was in Indian Casino just outside OKC the other night and they had a 2-5 scoot game there, 200 buy in. I bought in for 500 and sat down to play. I watched the first few hands an noticed that Every player, no matter the size of the pot was tipping the dealer 5 dollars. Then i noticed that every hand the dealer was chopping out 5 dollars for the rake. I finally won a small pot of about 125 dollars and ask the dealer for some ones, as there were only 2 ones in the pot. The dealer looked at me as if to say "what the heck to you want with ones". I gave the dealer 3 dollars and she looked at me like i had stole her blankiee or something.
I do believe that one should tip those dealers something, but i think that some are over payed as is. JMHO

I've been told that blackjack dealers do much better than poker dealers when it comes to tips.

I would think that is right, if they are not just "killing" the players. I only tip BJ dealers when done playing and have locked up a win!

I tip $1 on every pot as long as there is a flop. Lowest I play live though is 20/40 basically.

I don't play poker but if I did I would inform the dealer that the tip will come after I'm done playing and have totaled up my wins or losses.

I've never been to a casino but the only way I'd tip a dealer is at the end of a winning session and the dealer did a good job say if I won $100 maybe I'd give them $5 or if I was up say $1000 maybe $20 that every hand stuff is bullshit in my opinion

Another scenario......

$125 buy in NL tourney.....$100 goes to the prize pool, $15 to the house, and $10 to the dealers

44 players(including rebuys), so that's $440 to the dealers and $660 to the house.

4 dealers(39 actual players), probably less than 4 hours......that right there is $110 cash to each dealer for their time.

Is it overboard for the casino to request a generous tip from the winner?

No, just sensitive.

A dealer that can deal 35 hands an hour will make about 25-30 times the average tip. That's good pay for basically unskilled labour. A dealer that spurns tips less than $5 should see the places in Las Vegas where quarters are in the pot to tip the dealer 50 cents for small pots in 3/6 games.

A dealer that feels slighted by a 1-3 dollar tip as mentioned above will receive 0 from me from then on. And I can glare back with the best of them. Same for a dealer who continously fails to acknowledge a tip(and I don't mean forgets occasionally). This the same for poker as for blackjack.

I agree with you on your tipping. I was a prop player in Gardena, CA and I was suprised how many of the props didn't tip at all. But the dealers understood this from the props since they were both working for the same house. Almost any dealers that I've been around understand that a small pot requires no tip. I would always tip one dollar in a 3-6 game, unless the pot was large and then I'd go as high as a nickle.

I had some friends that were dealers and one of them looked at dealing a jackpot and getting stiffed as just another hand. But other dealers looked at it as if they didn't get a hundred dollars when they dealt a jackpot that the person who won was a stiff if they gave them anything less.

Since I haven't play live in some time, I just wonder if that's the way the new breed of dealers look at things....greedily! And just maybe they're getting spoiled by the young players that are trying poker for the first time, and are over tipping to start with.

Poker dealers have one advantage, though ! In many places a poker dealer keeps their own tips, so a competent, fun, personable ( possibly hot) dealer will do well, while an unpleasant dealer will do poorly.

BJ dealers split tips, so some dealers are downright entertaining and fun, while others don't know how to say any more than...Insurance ? They all make the same, so no incentive to excel, just deal at an acceptable level with no thought to the players.

most do expect a tip every hand even without a flop. If you play poker longterm it is hard to be an overall winner if you tip every pot you win. I will tip after my session. If I win I tip generously, If I lose then usually not. I do always tip the cocktail server though. You can find yourself tipping several hundred bucks in one night if you do as expected. Tough to make up that "juice"

I agree WVU....wait staff expect tips & rely on them. I'm not so sure about dealers though. I'm not cheap, in fact I throw money around entirely too much, but I just hate the feeling of getting gouged.
