SPRINGFIELD - Visitors to Illinois' capital city last week might have been wondering if they'd taken a wrong turn somewhere in Iowa.

Flying atop an under-construction state historic building across the street from the busy Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum was a University of Iowa Hawkeyes flag.

The flag flapped in the spring breeze for at least a couple of days before state officials discovered the gaffe and had the flag removed over the weekend.

"When we found out about it, we immediately contacted the contractor and had them take the flag down," said David Blanchette, spokesman for the Illinois Capital Development Board. "Only U.S. and state flags should be flying on top of state buildings, whether under construction or otherwise.

"Had we known of their plan, we could have told them before it happened," said Blanchette, whose agency is overseeing the $12.5 million renovation of the Union Station facility.

The building, formerly used as a train station, eventually will become the visitors' center for the museum, a popular tourist draw since it opened last April.

Blanchette said the flag was placed atop a new flagpole on the building by construction crews. He said several workers for the general contractor, Halverson Construction Co. of Springfield, attended the University of Iowa and apparently thought it would be fun to fly the flag from their alma mater. <!-- END CONTENT -->

Hawkeye fans are strange birds.

They took fingerprints off the flag and they matched those from a golf cart at West Bend from years ago.

I was only a rider and we DID NOT drive on the greens. In fact, I seldom drive greens even on par-3's.

Chicago is the real capital of Illinois. Springfield is just a truck stop that happens to contain a state legislature.

Hawkeye fans are nutty. I went to Ames with my frat pledges on a kidnapping weird frat thing. Mr Fish and several of us got into ISU football stadium somehow. I ripped up nice part of field for souvenir. My bro was going to school there at the time and had the privilege of introducing him to my roommate, Fishhead. Fishhead then started eating a tree. Totally wasted and I am sure he doesnt remember. Mr brother can't forget it though. He was in rare form then.

Six miles from West Bend Country Club

Just think, you have posted 44,323 times since you last played there. I do remember your game though. I remember playing No. 2 at Spring Valley, a 185 yard par 3 with about a 40 mph wind out of the south. You had a little (well, maybe a better word would be gargantuan) slice that day. When you teed off on that hole you were just about facing directly to the south, which would be 90 degrees from the hole. You proceed to hit a 3-wood (yes a 3 wood on a 185 yard hole) and it sliced more than any ball I have ever seen hit, all the way on the green to about 10 feet from the cup. But in spite of your one hole heroics, you still lost money that day which means back then you didn't have quite the gambling skills you possess today. :toast:

How much do I owe you(without interest)?

That hole reminds me.........was playing Boulder City Muni in Nevada and was having the best 9-hole round of my life!!

Heading to the 7th hole, was sporting a -2 under par score with the help of a 140 yard chip in on a Par 5 for eagle.

The 7th is one tough hole......a 223 yard Par 3. On this day there was also the problem of a 25 mph wind blowing toward the tee box............making this one tough shot. I sliced a driver to the back of the green(great shot) and was left with about a 50 foot downhill putt for birdie..............well, I proceeded to 5-putt for triple bogey and to this day have not recovered.

I average about a 5 putt. Played 9 holes a couple of years ago where I hit every green in regulation and shot a 43. Figure that one out.
