Here in Costa Rica as with many other countries in the world, in sports leagues, the worst team in a league *like the Knicks* would go down into a division II league, while the best team of the II division would go into the main division. Ive never seen or heard of this even be mentioned in any league in the United States. Is this such a bad idea in the US and why?

Its ALL about the money! And the draft is supposed to take care of that but it doesnt very often. Sometimes the teams that draft well get it together in a few years.

Why is it a good idea?

Divisions in the Major Sports are set up Geographically. Gets screwed up a bit as teams move and expansion, but it seems better than moving weak teams to the 2nd tier. They have to improve or get their brains bashed in for a few years.

You play you division foes more, and it makes for better Rivalries.

Very few would care about that Division II...

Attendance would be hororible... Like Baseball's Minor Leagues, or that NBDL (for the NBA).

Because "professional" sports are 80% show, and 20% sport, while most other countries leagues are 90% pure adrenalin sport.

ha ha, i love the relegation/promotion idea.

when i lived in italy, i loved watching italian soccer each year and seeing teams fighting for their lives at the end of the season!

imagine watching the royals, devil rays and mariners fighting it out in september trying to stay up in the MLB and not getting bumped down to Triple A ball!

and imagine a bunch of AAA teams fighting to win the top 3 spots in their league to get promoted, that'd be awesome!!!

but it'd never happen, of course. never in a million years.

The main reason it wouldn't work in MLB is because most AAA teams are owned by a ML team!

hell switch em out for one year ... worse team in the NBA switches out with a team from the WNBA:

"Hang on .. I've got the Comets plus 150 pts tonite against the Suns are they down by only 146 w/30 seconds to go ..."

Your city and owners decide to shell out the funds for a $400 mil stadium. Two years later you are in the minors. Imagine what happens to the bonds on that white elephant should the team not be able to move back up next year. Not to mention that soccer teams have a whole world of players to try to acquire. If you suck as a baseball team and you want to get better, you don't have some league in Italy or Brazil to pick up some promising talent.

One thing left out of here is that teams that get relegated and the teams that move up often swap a lot of players. Teams going down obviously need to cut down on the payroll while those moving up need to add some talent or else they go down the next year. What happens is a team of say 20 soccer players, 12 or 13 are cut from the descending team and 5 or 6 of them get picked up by the ascending team. The rest work their way through transfers to other teams (sort of like our free agency).
