There was a fat lady of the oprea back in the 1800's that was very famous. One night she lost her voice before a show she was featured in. Well as the show goes on the people wondered where this fat lady was at. When they were told what had happened the phrase, well the show aint over till the fat lady sings was first uttered. The people were mad as thats who they came to see and they did not want there money back. And thats how the phrase It
aint over till the fat lady sings was born.

Anyone have any idea where this saying originated or why?

First time I heard it was from Dick Motta who was coaching the Bullets in the NBA Finals against the Sonics (around 1978).

Wagner Opera's were so long and complicated that nobody knew when it was time to leave, so the public was informed that they always ended in a female solo aria with a crescendo of music.

Personally, Siegfried's Death and funeral march is my Favourite.:drink:

ahhhhhhh, makes sense, but strange it would last so long. I mean the opera is such a small fraternity of ppl, would seem hard that they could spread a saying to such a large population of ppl and have it last 200 years...but your explanation is as good as any I have heard, thanks!!

Remember the Bullets using this as their motto, back in the late 70's versus Seattle in the NBA Finals.

They played the Sonics in back to back Finals , splitting.

Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Kevin Grevey, Bobby Dandridge, Henderson
Sikma, Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, Freddie Brown, Marvin Webster

Thought it just started recently when Mandisa was singing on American Idol.

I really think that Yogi Bera started that saying back in the late 50's.

As we ALL know that most baseball games are deceided in the 8th or 9th.

Its not that it lasted so long as that I think it got passed around and resurrected a few times along the way. If I am not mistaken fat ladys were the norm and in plays as well as opera and other things.
