interesting. as a life long fan i must say of course that being a life long fan means that i originally fell in love with vh when dlr was the singer.however i really think i liked them better with sammy and feel that may be due to the fact that sammy was in the band longer (and contrary to popular belief he still is,just take a look at the official website)

sammy (live) sings circles around dlr.and the chemistry that did at one time exist between eddie and sammy was awesome.i have seen this band live over 30 times and have also seen dlr everytime he came through and my vote would be for sammy.and have to think i would be very hesitant(but would go) if dlr ever got back together with the guys!

if you are a big van halen you need to check out vhlinks. it is by far the best vh website, good reading everyday! a lot of dave vs. sammy threads:suomi: BUT I ENJOY THEM BOTH AND WILL SUPPORT VH FOREVER

Roth was a performer, a real 'rock star' (not nearly as talented but had the stage presence) his image alone was a big part of the early success.

Sammy Hagar, is much more talented vocally....I liked both eras, but preferred the group with Hagar, by far!

Not that it matters but the band didn't have a #1 album until Sammy Hagar...I sure wish they'd patch it up and have one last run, they've wasted 10 years already....

Is there any talk of a new album?

always talk of a new album(eddie claims to have hundreds of songs ready to go),just waiting for lyrics.i think it is over ,however if you get a chance to see the other half! (sammy and michael anthony's band) jump on it! THEY WILL NOT DISAPPOINT ANY (OLD OR NEW) FANS. they have already confirmed many dates.

you know what is funny as hell???? SAMMY WILL CELEBRATE HIS 60TH B'DAY NEXT YEAR! WE SHOULD ALL HOPE TO BE AS LUCKY AS HE HAS BEEN.AND TO LOOK AND BE AS COOL AS HE IS AT THAT AGE

join us over at the links journeyman.lots of vh news

Unfreaking real! 60!

Then again, it's been 10 years since that infamous Roth , VH reuinion appearance at the MTV awards show.

I got to dig up my VH today, been way too long since I have listened to them.

Saying Hagar was better than Roth is like saying Brian Johnson is better that Bon Scott (AC/DC). So what if Hagar sold more cds. Roth was Van Halen.

Journey - Eddie is also a head case. Pretty much ruined the band with his drinking and in-fighting.

Has a more talented band ever turned in to such a pile of turd? Twice?

Fair Warning, as much credit as you give DLR for being VH, he was also their demise in Phase I. Diver Down was a complete joke, and he was making a mockery of rock. Still have my vinyl I, II, Fair Warning (the album), can remember looking at the pics on VH I and thinking...that is what I want to do when I grow up. By the time 1984 came out and I heard the first few bars of jump...Van Halen was the LAST band I'd want to be like.

DLR' solo career was simply an extension of where VH was heading with him as front man. Hagar joined the group and made them a rock band again instead of a joke.

I wish the original VH continued down the path of their first three albums but the quite possibly might be the very first example of "jumped to shark"

Hagar recently said after the last reunion tour he wouldn't play with VH brothers again. He's got his own thing going, they need him alot more than he needs them.

That means the only possible move is for DLR to rejoin! What drama that would be.

WC - I hate Jump. Diver Down was no great cd either. I agree with 90% of what you wrote and DLR was no angel either. I did see them during the 5150 Tour. Nothing pisses me off more Van Halen coming out on stage and listening to Sammy belting out Panama and other DLR songs.

I did like the Hagar solo career however.

FW, I was a huge SH fan at the time he joined VH. So much so that I thought he was stupid for joining.

If you are going to replace your lead singer, I'd say VH did about as good a job as you can considering the former guy was still alive and putting out just a gigilo.

But I'm sitting here watching/listening to this concert above and DLR has already forgotten the lyrics to both songs and is rarely singing, missing entire phrases of lines. This was 1982! As much of an asshole as Eddie is, imagine if he just quit playing key guitar parts in the middle of songs!

Hagar hated playing old VH stuff, the brothers made him do it. And he used to have someone from the crowd sing Jump, because it was such a stupid and bad song he couldn't do it himself.
