Probably my single most favorite record in all of sports... Im not a big Dimaggio fan but can well remember Pete Rose's run at the fabled streak. Even though im a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, i still cant forgive Gene Garber and the other long since forgotten pitchers on that hot July night so many years ago, that they stopped Pete's streak at 44...

One of my most memorable quotes was about Joe D's streak, it had captured the imagination of the entire nation and it was said that people on the dusty streets of Montana would stop each other and say, "Did he get one today" and people would just know..

Now as another season is open us (thank you Lord) one can only wonder how far Jimmy Rollins can get.. He does have an active streak going, somewhere in the 30's, somebody help me on this one..

How will it be treated by the media and baseball in general, if Jimmy reaches Pete's national league record of 44..

This and the possible chase of a .400 season are 2 of my favorites, just wondering, whats yours..

Here is to Jimmy getting a hit monday and the entire first week, then maybe we can sweep the talk of steroids off the table..

I'd say the odds of him getting 44 (he has 36 now which would mean 8 games in a row) is pretty slim; April is always cold and Rollins has been particularly cold in the beginning of seasons' past

although I'd love for him to break it/come close!

well technically it's the same as if it were over one season (correct me if i'm wrong here) so it'd go in the record books as replacing Rose or D but i have to believe the media will talk about it with an asterisk...

I agree. Rollins usually starts slow so unlikely to see the streak even reach 40 although it would be nice to hear about something other than steroids!

This is one of my favorite records as well. Not around for Joe D's run, but was for Pete's run. Grew up in Louisville, and a big Reds fan, being just 100 miles from Cincy. Got to see most all of the games on local TV. I remember Garber and the Braves D making some plays to shut Pete out.

I agree with most here in thinking that Rollins won't even get to 44. It will be interesting to see how the media and the "purists" view the streak if he does. I think if he gets close to Pete(and Wee Willie Keeler) for the NL record, I think the buzz will start, and spread quickly the closer he gets.

As a fan, I'd love to see him make a run.

With all the steroid issues going on in baseball, I think the chase for .400 is probably my favorite "feat" in the sport. You can bulk up all you want; no amount of muscle is gonna help you hit .400. It takes a truly special player to do it.

I think this is one of those records that will last forever. To get that many hits is amazing. Plus with all the media scrutiny the pressure really gets to you. I can't imagine going up to the plate and just trying to relax.

I don't think Rollins will get to 56. I don't see this record being broken for a long long time.

Great point and I agree either that or the 56 game hitting streak is now the record of records the intrest that will bring will be incredible.
One other landmark is a 30 game winner.

Paul Molitor had 39 in "87" and you would have thought he was at 50 hits. The way the media hyped it from like 30 on, I think the pressure can be great.

30 game winner will be a tough one, with 5 man rotations, a number one pitcher will probably get around 35 starts.

cklennon... i believe i read somewhere (can't place it) that if Rollins does break the record.. it will go down in the record books as longest game hitting streak in a career... rather than season..

Rollins extends hitting streak to 38
Phillies leadoff man smacks double in first inning

PHILADELPHIA -- Jimmy Rollins listened to his mother Wednesday.

Gigi Rollins expressed some angst after Monday's heart-stopping wait until her son's final at-bat to exhale, and jokingly requested for a quicker pace.
Rollins obliged in the bottom of the first inning, by slicing a double past Scott Rolen on the second pitch he saw from St. Louis starter Mark Mulder. That extended his franchise-best hitting streak to 38 games.
"It doesn't matter which at-bat it is, I'm trying to do something for the team," Rollins said. "I don't worry about when it comes, as long as I'm productive."
Rollins' production led the way to a first-inning run for Philadelphia, though the Phillies ended up dropping their second straight game, 4-3, to St. Louis.
Next on Rollins' hit list is Paul Molitor, who went 39 straight games in 1987. After that, it's Ty Cobb (40), George Sisler (41), Bill Dahlen (42), Pete Rose (44), Wee Willie Keeler (45) and finally Joe DiMaggio (56). Getting a hit in the first inning was the 14th time he extended the streak in the opening frame, and moved him past Tommy Holmes for the eighth-longest streak in Major League history. He's batting .379 during the streak, which started Aug. 23, 2005, against San Francisco's Brian Cooper.
