Would it be hard for a worker at a sportsbook to steal money/info from your account?

the reason I asked is I just had to sign up over the phone (sites sign-up forms were down) and the guy on the other end made me suspicious. Just had a weird feeling and started to think how we just hand over info to these people with alot of trust. Could have swore I heard of somehting like this happening in past(idenity theft).

Almost impossible....unless it is management who have total access to player profiles and changes. Haven't heard any horror stories since 2001 when I arrived. Now before computers and Don Best, that is a different story.

I don't see that happening and in the remote situation a book wouldn't risk his reputation and would pay back. Usually people with acces are trust people who's worked in the company for years with a clean profile.

sportsbook software is set up to let the clerks and customer service staff see only what they need to see to do their job. Most of the delicate financial info. is only available to the accountants, administrators, owners, etc.... CC companies obviously protect the clients judging by the chargeback rate and e-check is just like giving a check to someone at the mall. If you trust some store clerk at the mall with a check whats the difference (Your address, phone number, account number, routing number etc.... is on the check).

IP´s are always logged when you log into your account so there is really no way someone from Costa Rica or any other country can log into your account and request a withdrawal. Where would they send the money? Even if they did get through all the hassle the sportsbook would obviously refund your account and kill the ex employee if someone did manage to take money out, which would be 1,000,000 to 1 chance.

Your money is safe as long as you play with reputable companies that actually have accounting departments, wagering departments, management and betting floors not to mention there are cameras all over the place at most sportsbooks and all computers are monitored with software developed to register everything the clerk does. These companies are divided for an obvious reason. If you are using a sportsbook and you get the same 3 people everytime you call I would be cautious and not keep all your eggs in one basket.........

Interesting thread. When I call in bets, I have to give a username, password, and full name. So any of the clerks there would have that and could probably remember it with ease.

Is there anything preventing a clerk from giving this info to someone else, having them call up, give all the info, bet my whole account on the New York Knicks to win a game, and then having it all lost? I doubt anything like it would happen but it's probably not impossible for something like that to occur at an unreputable sportsbook. Might be hard to have something like that resolved after the fact.

Jefe,

All calls are recorded so it would be tough for someone to call in a bet. They would be able to tell if it was the person or not through voice recognition systems.

As far as shared account go most sportsbooks have a clause that says they accept no responsibility for shared accounts, but again the recordings tell all and betting patterns do as well. Most of the phone technology now a days have caller ID so sportsbooks can check the call logs also and see from what number the call was placed from the time on the ticket.......

Its fool proof and everyones safe from fraud so feel free to place your wagers and deposit knowing everything is ok AS LONG AS YOU PLAY WITH REPUTABLE BOOKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm more worried about someone hacking my emails, downloading a keylogger etc than getting ripped off by a sportsbook employee.

OK, but what if they log in to the website with my account and bet around the same amount I usually bet on a game? Would I have to rely on IP address logs or something to prove it was not me?

Jefe,

I would assume so. Ip logs are the first thing that would be looked at and then betting patterns. Worse case scenario you would be refunded and you would have to change your password. This has never happened and I have worked for several books for about 5 years now and I have never seen it happen. I have seen shared accounts try and pull strange stuff and of course casino players always have something to say when they are losing, but an employee putting wagers in on someones account is just stupid on their behalf. There are alot of sportsbooks out there and most owners know each other and talk and they are always catious about who they hire especially with delicate player info.

Its like the movie Casino when Robert Deniro tells Joe Pecci ¨ Once your in that black book, you can´t even be in the parking lot of a Casino......¨

Good info and thanks for all of the insight.

And some of the lines in that movie Casino are words to live by:
"In the end, we get it all"
"When he won, he collected...when he lost, he told the bookies to go fuck themselves..."

IP logs won't prove or disprove anything. You could be on a static or dynamic IP. You may have the same IP address everytime or you may be sharing a group of IP addresses within a certain area. If you use Bellsouth for example you may have the same IP address that someone across town had yesterday.
