Just watched one of those ESPN Orginal Entertainment deasl on Barry Bonds. 1 hour special. One of those things where it's no commentary or voice overs whatsoever, Just Barry Bonds speaking in interviews at his home, in the lockerroom, all behind the scenes, all the way up until yesterday being interviewed about the syringe. Pretty good stuff.

He broke down and cried in one interview on his couch. Pretty much saying he stands up for everyone in the game. He could have exploded by now and gone off and throw people under the bus like others have, but he is the one taking all of the heat and he doesnt mind. People want him to retire, but he says half the fans like him and half the fans hate him. He made a promise to his dad, mom etc that he will always do his best. His fans, teammates, depend on him, so why should he retire for a group of fans that dislike him? He wants to win a title, he worked hard to come back from knee injuries.

He says all this while wipign tears from his face. I love these ESPJN Orginal Entertainment things.

Anyone else catch this?

There are a lot of us that wouldn't trade privacy and a normal life for what he goes through daily for that $15 million. I certainly wouldn't want my personal life as the discussion of every home in America.

How many "cheats" are in the game right now?

I'm still anxious to hear which rules he broke.

his personal life wouldnt be the discussion of every home in america if:

1) he wasnt such a prick
2) he didnt cheat
3) he didnt decide to do his own reality show on espn

look at michael jordan or joe montana...are their personal lives the topic of discussion in every home in america?

no, because they are not complete jagoffs to the media and to fans.

I remember when everyone would talk about Jordan's gambling when he went to AC during the playoffs. I also hear plenty of stories about his gambling on the golf course.

I bet quite a bit myself...but I don't think everyone in America knows about it.

Michael Jordan was always a topic of discussion in every home in America when he was playing.

Barry is an ass hole...I agree. But what did he do any differently than a majority of major leaguers? He was great before he beefed up...he is great after.

the number of people and amount of time spent talking about jordan's gambling is nothing compared to bonds' steroid abuse.

Thats the clincher. All of those guys who failed for steroids are not discussed whatsoever, and I bet you at least 1 of them is a bigger asshole than Barry. Its all about the stats, everything else is just gravy.

yeah, you're right...but only to an extent.

for $15million, i'd give up a year or two of my privacy. hell, i'd do a couple years in a federal prison for $15million!

i wouldn't want to STAY in the public eye, sure, you're right..but i'd make my money and get the hell out.

he can walk away from the game and fade away anytime he wants.

I did kind of feel sorry for him. Dont get me wrong, Im not shedding any tears for the guy, and I doubt Ill lose any sleep. Hes still a big leaguer making tons of money and going after a homerun title.

But, just like in the movie 61* that is BIG TIME STRESS and Maris didnt have to deal with the amount of media we have today, the steroid issue, the race issue (sort of), etc.

At the end of the day, Barry Bonds is a human being. He's not some super-clone robot who never makes mistakes. He's a regular guy that is just really talented at baseball, the way Martha Stewart has a talent for interior design and shit. Even that lady made a mistake.

Bonds didn't brek any rules when he did what he did. And I promise you, a lot more guys will be exposed about this. The main reason he has this pressure is because of how good he is. Rafael Paleiro was a great guy, so was Mcgwire and they wore media criticism too. But neither of them were chasing this homerun record.

Even as Mike Scmidt said on the show last night in an interview, "Man, I can't promise you I wouldnt of taken steroids back in the day if they were as popular as they were a few years ago. Every serious competitor is always looking for an edge, and a guy like Barry is a great competitor. Something like that wasnt against the rules, and I was going to be more powerful, stronger and playe better? I cant make any promises that I wouldnt of done it."

And its the truth. As a mentioned before, it's almost a career move.

The media every single day asked this guy about steroids. He never buckles. Sometimes he's a prick and I sure as hell would be too if I had paparazzi at my home when I take my kids somewhere in the car, if my whole life 24/7 was steroids. This one mistake will haunt him for the rest of his life, its alot of pressure on the guy that nobody on this board can possibly FATHOM!

So, yes, in a way, I do feel sorry for the guy. You ever fucked up before?

Every single one of us is gambling on sports over the internet. Which is sort of legal/illegal/immoral. One day, if your name was Condoleeza Rice, instead of Bob from Okalahoma, they found out they you were an everyday gambler, you would say, "well it wasnt really illegal at the time."

Another thing:

Death threats. This guy is receiving death threats daily. There are some really sick and crazy people out there, especially sports fans. People are getting his email addresses somehow. His phone number. Calling his home, he picks up and he hears "I'm gonna kill you n*gger*". He opens his mail and it's "n*gger, black ape" etc.

Holy shit. I dont know what I would do. Have you ever had an anonymous death threat on your home phone before? I havnt. Emal? Nope. Cant imagine how much stres that alone would cause me. I imagine Id get the police involved, trace the number do something. I dont know how crazy or serious that guy is. My family is in my house, I have to protect them and myself at all costs. This is a daily occurence. Every day Barry Bonds wakes up is a shitty day. Absolutely shitty.

-Run to my car. Avoid paparazzi.
-Watch my back, had a death threat again last night.
-Get to the field, avoid media rush.
-Get to the lockerroom, avoid media rush.
-Dress for game.
-Play game, get booed, have syringes thrown at me. Fans cursing me at the top of their lungs.
-Leave the field to the lockerroom. Watch my back. Had a death threat again last night.
-Media questions about steroids. Not the game.
-Get dressed walk to my car. Avoid media rush about steroids.
-Watch out for guy who called my home and threatened my life. Dont know where that guy might be.
-Get in my car. Watch my back. Rear view.
-Get home, avoid paparazzi.
-Spend time with my family. Eat some dinner. Play with my kids. Get another phone call. Another death threat.
-Go to sleep, worried about what may happen in the middle of the night.
-Wake up and do it all over again.

When the dust settles, its just Barry. He doesnt have body guards left and right and he doesnt get places scouted out like the president. He gets syringes thrown at him on the field. People screaming at the top of their lungs that they hate him.

All because I screwed up. I did something immoral. It wasnt against the rules at the time, everyone else was doing it, and Im the one taking the blame for everyone else. He tarnished the game. Well crap. Its just a game. He doesnt need syringes and objects thrown at him, and he doesnt need racist and death threat letters and phone calls. Paparazzi. Etc. Asshole or not.

somewhere in this schedule should be: Held a press conference to announce my retirement and save whatever respect some people still have for me

He still has plenty of people that root for him. And if you havnt lost respect for him now, you never will. When he breaks these records, respect for him may be regained for a few people. Just out of popularity and the rush of breaking it. The majority will stay dislike him.

But as he said on the show:

1) He loves the game of baseball
2) He wants to win a ring
3) His teammates depend on him
4) The fans that like him depend on him
5) His biggest fan and competitor was his father. He watched his father die in front of his face at 8am from lung cancer. He made a promise to his father to always play hard and always strive for his best.

Why should he retire for "you"?

Retiring would be a coward thing to do IMO. To run away from it all. I have more respect for him dealing what hes dealing with on a daily basis, and still playing the game and honoring his teammates and the fans that do like him, then fading into the sunset when steroid allegations arise.
