I know that the Marlins are starting 6 rookies on occasion during the year, but at least they have Cabrera and Willis as their leaders of the future. I cant name one guy on the entire Pirates team that I would trade for.....Im even talking about a player to be named later type of trade. Ill go out on a limb and say that they will make a run at history for futility. Cant believe that owership in this city has allowed this team to become soo awful. I remeber the days of Stargell, Madlock, Parker....Teukulve.(sp) Seems to me that the people of the steel city will never see those days again....What a shame. They play in one of the nicest ballparks, why not give the fans something to come and cheer for. I bet they dont draw 30 thousand on opening day. :drink: :pucking:

As a lifelong Pirates fan, I am officially depressed. A few more seasons and they break the Phillies streak of consecutive losing seasons (16 I think). It's really a shame and makes baseball a lot less enjoyable for me.

guys, i'll be first to admit that the Pirates are a below average team....but, you cant make ANY generalizations 5 days into the season!!!

i have read numerous articles talking about how oddsmakers notice people make the mistake of making assumptions way too early.

i did not have any expectations for the Pirates...i think they have a decent group of young, talented baseball players. there has to be teams that start the year off bad because not everyone can be 4-0 right now!!!! the Pirates are one of those teams that has been slow out of the gate, so what? let's not get carried away by saying they will struggle to win 50...

Im not sayin they will lose 110 games but they have no realistic shot at competeing. It didnt take an 0-4 start to know that. Just wish I could actually watch my team in a meaningful game after June. It gets old year after year

Oliver Perez
Zach Duke
Damaso Marte
Mike Gonzalez
Jason Bay
Jose Castillo

Just to name a few that a lot of teams would love to have. Just not enough of them

Buce lose 7-6 coming back just enough to make it hurt a little more

Poker King.......didnt mean too stick the knife into your gut and twist it a little.....I was just stating the truth, and I seriously believe that the Pirates are a team and organization that is battling against its self year after year with these slow starts...... seems to me that it damages a young teams confidence in a quick hurry......always climbing a uphill battle. Hopefully Im wrong....cuz I like to see the underdogs overachieve.

Will the Phillies win 50 games?

Man 0-4 all at home is rough. If they lose to Derek Lowe tomorrow, the fans better boo like hell.

I agree....Phillies are a disppointment also to start the season...more soo than the Pirates since expectations are a little higher there. Huge fan of Ryan Howard.....not necessarily a Phillies fan Benny....Life long Twins fan... Saw Howard put on a amazing display of power last year on a trip to Denver during B.P......thats the reason for my avatar.

As a Pirate fan, its really depressing to compare team to Cleveland. In those 13 seasons of losing( after the 3rd division title in '92) the Indians, from a comparable market, have built a fine team that won two al pennants and then dismantled it and started over and built it back to that level with long term planning and still the Pirates suck! McClatchy has no more excuses. Maybe I'll go to game when Tigers come to town with last three Pirate managers on their staff and a guy leading majors(I know its early) in hrs in Shelton who Pirates didn't deem worthy of a shot when he was in organization. Pirates starting to look like Arizona Cardinals or DetroitLIons where it doesn't matter who coache or manager is but the organization just stinks and that is the responsibility of the owners.
Well, at least I'm old enough to have enjoyed the '71 and '79 Champions!
Could be worse as I could have been born a Cub fan!

No problem. Just had to add that Philly not winning a game yet is shocking.

I thought you were a Philly fan but wasn't bashing. Just saying I can't believe them. I lost money on them tonight.

I was sad to see Ryan end his streak.

See Chris Shelton hit his 5th homer of the season and is now batting a cool .668. This was a guy the Pirates left unprotected in the Rule V draft so they got nothing in return. They also lost Jose Bautista (A guy the organization thinks will be the 3B of the future) in the same Rule V draft and had to trade to get him back. They left these guys inprotected in favor of other scrubs such as Jason Boyd and Willis Roberts.

Few seasons ago the Bucs traded Aramis Ramirez to the Cubs for virtually nothing (Jose Hernandez and Bobby Hill). This was when Ramirez was really coming on. Pirates also threw a red hot Kenny Lofton in to sweeten the pot for the Cubbies. For every good move we make (Giles for Bay and Perez) the club makes 3 bad ones (Jason Schmidt for Ryan Vogelsong and Armando Rios). It's almost comical at this point.

Pirates just the other day extended GM Dave Littlefield's contract through the 2009 season

PKJ:

I guess Littlefield wants to be there when they break the Phils' record. I hope they invite Cam Bonifay who really got it all going. Should invite back Pat Mears and the truest Pirate of all, Derrik Bell(because he stole their money and went to live on a boat after Bonifay got him by winning a bidding war that only involved Cam and Bell's agent).
