Here is a comparison check list of traits and tendencies for gamblers and calculated risk takers. Gambler

  • Looks for excitement and danger.
  • Jumps in with the crowd momentum, not wanting to be left out or left behind.
  • Blames others or luck for bad outcome.
  • Lingers over losing choices and wins not taken.
  • Is influenced by unacknowledged fantasies of what is possible.
  • Will risk more than can afford to lose.
  • Acts on impulsive decisions.
  • Is unaware of unconscious motivations.
  • Acts out of sense of superiority or magical thinking.
  • Gets high and feels powerful on a win. Gets low and feels worthless and small on a loss.
  • Lacks discipline and invests on wishful fantasy rather than recognizes reality.
  • Hides losses and is secretive about taking chances.
  • Procrastinates (building up excitement levels).
  • Follows a favorite method no longer useful or relevant.
  • When losing will take increasingly bigger risks to catch up.
  • Looks for the one big win that will result in bliss.
Calculated Risk Taker

  • Contains and manages emotions.
  • Is aware of irrational factors swaying a crowd.
  • Takes responsibility for results.
  • Does not waste time with what might have been.
  • Acknowledges personal fantasies and resolves them or disregards them.
  • Risks a tiny fraction of equity on any individual choice (equity meaning time, money, relationship, self esteem, skill etc.).
  • Concentrates on a realistic long-term strategy.
  • Knows personal abilities and limitations.
  • Is hardworking and open to new ideas.
  • Stays emotionally even during wins and losses.
  • Easily resists risks that do not fit within defined risk limitations.
  • Is open about risk taking.
  • Proceeds in a serious intellectual manner.
  • Stays alert to present trends.
  • Follows predetermined guidelines of safety.
  • Analyzes situation, observes own reactions and makes realistic plans

Whether it's playing video poker at the Casinos or wagering on a sporting event, I seldom enjoy gambling unless I have a mathematical advantage. In video poker it involves playing only machines that offer over 100 % return and reading the books and practicing until I feel I can play almost 100 % correctly. When wagering on sports etc., I must feel confident that I have some knowledge or insight that gives me a mathematical advantage again.
I do a lot of wagering on futures and part of the success of that is getting the best odds and then being able to hedge your wager to insure success. I hate to lose $$ foolishly and you will never see me putting $$ into Keno or slot machines etc. There are no 100 % payback slot machines !

Have to agree completely with your synopsis.....but must correctly disagree with your final statement.

Hey Fish ! What's up ? I just want to know where there are 100 % payback slot machines and Keno machines ? And to take it a step further... if there are such machines... just how could the Casino stay afloat as anyone and everyone would be winning there !
Also I wanted to bring up the time at the Golden Nugget when you showed me the 10/7 double bonus machine and We played it together for awhile. I had never learned the rules like you had learned on how to play that game. However after your short tutelage, I thought I was ready after you left me alone ! I proceded to lose my A-s in a timely manner ! It just goes to prove that it does take some time to correctly learn these games and play them correctly. I have since mastered that game and have been doing very well. Thanks for your imput as I enjoy double bunus much more than 9/6 jacks or better and it pays better once learned. GL !

Double Bonus is by FAR my all-time favorite VP game..........mainly because one can find higher denomination versions and many multi-play machines such as we played.

As far is non-video poker slots are concerned.......

There are basically two types of these slots that pay over 100%.

1. BANKING/VISION slots
2. PROGRESSIVE slots

1. These are slots with VISION screens atop them and provide extra bonuses that have been built up by others, thus making them 100%+........a form of progressive actually..

2. Progressives are a continously rising JACKPOT that is so high that it makes a machine a positive 100%+ play.

Kermit- Yours trully played the above two types as much or as close to anybody in Vegas in my tenure there and did very, very well sir.

Will explain further at this years bash.

Based on the definitions as presented, I would say for the most part a Calculated Risk Taker, but can see a couple of statements under Gambler that fit as well.

Kermit, an example of a slot with a advantage is the BOOM! machine.

There is a bonus section when you get, I think 31 firecracker's you his the bonus. You find a bank of these machines, and look for machines that have 17 firecrackers or more, from other gamblers who either ran out of money, or gave up on their luck, and play until it hits.

I don't have the caculations right now, but if you can find some in the $1 demonation, it's a good find.

When I was youngerI was mostly a gambler. I played poker till I realized I lost more that I won. Steamed to double up on Monday Night football. Played other sports I knew nothing or cared about. Love the anticipation and excitement of wagering. I thought I could beat the NFL even knowing in my heart I could not. As you get older you discard the follies of youth or you perish. I have mostly discarded the follies of youth. I have come to realize that I LOVE and make money on ONE sport. That was the hardest thing to acknowledge. I am a ONE trick pony. I confess to sometimes play more on some games than others. I am now more of a calculated risk taker with a teeny weeny gambler thrown in the pot. God, how I absolutely LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL! I hope that wherever I end up at, there will be college football! LT:103631605 :toast:

Have played these types machines all over the country, having literally travelled to many different states just to play certain types. There are well over 200 types of vision machines, firecracker being one of many.

Have never seen the machine you are referring to in anything higher than quarters that I can recall. This indeed is a good play, as even nickel machines usually is worth picking up a few dollars in a 2-6 minutes of play/work with basically no risk whatsoever.

OK ... You have spiked my interest ! I guess I was talking more about the run of the mill slot machines and Keno machines like my wife and Mother always play. I guess I'm never too old to learn new tricks ! Show me the way as I love advantage play. I look forward to the Bash and hopefully you can show me some new games. You are one shrewd Cat !

depends on the situation, I wish I was always a sports investor, but when I am looking for action I am a gambler, however that is far and few between and for far less money.

Much like kermit above, I won't play anything where I don't think I have an edge...

I'm much the same, although I will rarely play at the craps table for peanuts. I consider it an entertainment expense since a rocking craps table is an interesting people watching experience.

What Bluemyboy said was for me to. Some days you are one and others the other. Sometimes its both depending on a number of factors.
