Sites completely overrun with ads/pop-ups/commercials

If you're using Opera or Firefox you should be able to block banners and pop-ups.

There are a lot of free pop up blockers available at download.com. Norton's firewall also comes with one built in.

If you are getting that many pop ups, it's quite possible that they are due to spyware\adware on your machine rather than the site itself. I'd do a virus & spyware sweep.

Not so much with pop ups but sites that are stuffed with a bunch of clutter on the front page are MLB.com and NBA.com. Those sites put some of their popular links next to banners making it easy to accidently click the irritating banner.

Good post. Also there are some Microsoft security patches that came out this week.
