I'm having a ball over here in Singapore. Lots of pretty Asian women who are mostly thin. I think mostly because the food here is served in smaller portions. Here are some interesting things about Singapore-

  • English is spoken by everyone since this is a former British Colony (independence for Singapore was in 1965). It's sometimes called "Asia Lite" since it's a modern city and easy for Americans to adapt to. People drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • The time here is 12 hours ahead of the East Coast during the summer so it's 5pm here and 5am in New York.
  • There are 4.2 million people who live here. 77% are Chinese, 14% are Malays, 8% are Eastern Indian and 1% are others. There are quite a few Muslim people since it is so close to Indonesia. It's odd to see Asian women wearing scarves over their heads.
  • It is the 2nd densest population in the world next to Monaco. 9 out of 10 people live in public housing flats. It seems like they are everywhere.
  • The world's largest fountain is in the Suntec Center. I was disappointed since there doesn't seem to be much water in it.
  • The world's highest man-made waterfall is at Jurong Bird Park (www.birdpark.com.sg).
  • People seem to be happier here. They are not afraid to laugh. I guess they aren't afraid of appearing to be goofy if they do.
  • The toilets contain a stall with no toilet bowl. It allows you to squat over a hole.
  • It's hard to buy Kleenex one box at a time. They come in 5-packs or more.
  • This is a very safe place. Women walk around parks alone at night.
  • A highway overpass is called a "flyover".
  • About half of the billboards feature caucasians. I don't know why.
  • If you want to take some fast food out it's not "to go", it's "take away". To eat it in it's not "for here", it's "eating in". A bag or sack to take things out is called a "carrier".
  • McDonald's, Burger King, Long Dong Silver's, Outback and other American restaurants are here. McDonald's has "Beef Fantastic" and "Chicken Fantastic" which include a rice bun with chopped meat inside.
  • No one wears sunglasses (except me). You would think everyone in a country that is just above 1 degree latitude would wear them but perhaps only people with blue eyes need them.
  • The temperature ranges from 70 degrees to the 80's but they note their temperatures in Celsius. The humidity is quite high and can be in the 90% range most of the day.
  • Singapore is an island of the coast of Malaysia and is growing constantly due to reclaiming land from the sea just like Holland is doing.
  • Good Friday is a holiday most companies observe.
  • Prostitution is legal. There is a place called Orchard Towers that is affectionately called "the four floors of whores" because there is a different Asian nationality of women on each of the four floors. I haven't been there yet but I'll try to take a picture. There is also an area called Geylang Street. The adjoining streets are called Lors and the odd Lors are on one side with the even Lors on the other side. Legal houses of prostitution take place in houses on each Lor.
  • There are remote-controlled model airplanes here that can hover. People put LED lights on them so they look like UFO's at night.
  • There are no $1 bills. There is a $1 coin that is about the size of a quarter. I've linked to my Singapore photo page to show you what they look like. The 5-cent pieces are smaller than a dime and cannot be used in vending machines. $2 bills and $1 coins are used a lot for change.
You can see a picture of Singapore coins here-

What are you doing up so early JMan?

I forgot one thing-

  • The exchange rate is 1.61 Singapore dollars for every 1 US dollar, or 1 Singapore dollar for every 0.625 US dollars. I withdraw $100 from an ATM (in Singapore dollars) and my bank statement says the withdrawal was for $62.50 (US dollars of course). So a SG$100 hooker will cost you US$62.50.

Good stuff Quantum,
I am fascinated by Singapore and enjoy your details. Any info on the casino developments and bidding? Would you say you it is a good place for a mid-30s single male like me?

It's a great place to be assigned to if you're on business GD. However, it's not really a vacation destination. It's a nice place to spend a couple relaxing days. 5-star hotels go for around US$120 per night here. You can find more things to do at this web site-

http://www.visitsingapore.com/publish/stbportal/en/home.html

If you are going for an extended vacation, there are cheaper places in Asia that offer more for you to do. I hope to make it to Phuket Island in Thailand soon. Cheap hotel rooms near the beach and plenty of cheap things to buy.

China is also cheaper than Singapore. The VP of the Asian Division of my company told me he stayed in a hotel in Beijing for US$90. He said it made his 5-star hotel in Singapore (http://www.carlton.com.sg/) look like a Super 8.

The Asian women are what makes it more enjoyable. They are very polite and shy. I suppose that kind of woman not for everyone but I sure like them.

I've heard good things about the Ipanema Bar. I'll have to stop by there some time before I leave.

Thanks.

We have flyovers in Vegas. Also do overs. Thats where you wish you had the money back you just lost so you can try to win again. If they are called Asia light are we called European light? We have quarter sized dollar coins called Susan B Anthonys. Right now its 3:25 am there or 12:25 Vegas time. Prostitution is legal in Vegas. Anyone seen craigslist, eros-guide or been at a bar at a hotel here in Vegas knows its true. If not I will make a very strong case for he Hard Rock aka Hard... will travel across the street to the paradise strip club.

GD you and all of Las Vegas will hear about it when the casino stuff is decided. I would put my money on MGM getting the deal there for Marina Bay and then a foreign operator, probably Genting, picking up Sentosa. You probably would be well served to go over there for work, but considering the significant cultural differences it might be a bit difficult to get the type of job you really deserve at first. I know that is how it has been for Macau so far, lots of interested LV types, but the casinos are going mostly with people from Asia who speak Mandarin and know the habits of Chinese people.

Biggest and craziest gambler are in Macau, over 98% of them are Chinese from Hong Kong and mainland. And the world fastest developing casino industry are ready to claim the #1 spot in gambling revenue in a year or two, with more than 10 billion dollars are ready to invest in the next couple years, it's just a blast, and amazing...went there last summer. Also reported a license is sold for 900 millions, yes, 900 millions just for a license.

QL, all the words and expressions that you found to be novel, e.g. flyover, are in fact the usage one finds in mother England. Not surprising really.

Sounds like you're having a great time.

If you close your eyes and listen to some of the people talk you would swear they are from England. Then when you open your eyes and see a person who looks more like a Pacific Islander it's quite a surprise. Consider that these people just gained their independence from England only 41 years ago.

did you notice how everyone says 'LA' after each sentence?

Yeah, it is a Chinese word, don't know what it mean, hard to translate as it means nothing.
