I returned this sucker a long time ago but today I got a letter saying either pay $69 and change or it gets sent to collections. I could call the store but I'm sure they will say that they have no record of it and to dispute it with the collection agency... I obviously have no proof I returned it since I don't get a slip or anything confirming that I put it back.

Any advice? I'm not paying 70 bucks for this thing but have no proof I ever returned it...

i don't see how they can charge you more than the cost of the used movie. call the store talk with the manager and see what you can work out. if they are of no help get intouch with someone above him. it will get worked out. you also may ask the store to try and track down that movie by doing an inhouse search.

who still rents movies? Just have them sent to your mailbox or order pay per view. The last time I rented a movie at Blockbuster this same thing happened. I ended up paying $59 for Top Gun while it was selling for 20 bux in the bin. They had already charged my card and I don't think I bothered to dispute it.

I must say WVU is right...why not just have them delivered to your house and send them back when you want...never any late fees

If you do infact go with this method stay away from Netflix, Blockbuster Online is a much better deal as you get a free in store rental every week, which anyone can use...so for me i get the movies to my house and my sister uses the free rental in columbus, and i am here in florida

Netflix blows

Don't bother with it -they will turn it over to collections and you will get some calls and alot of threatening letters but as long as they don't have a credit card or some way of charging you they will not be able to collect it. I signed up for Columbia house one time and got the 5 or 6 free cd's but never bought anything else. They sent me all kinds of letters and I got a couple from a collection agency too but it stopped after a while. Did not hurt my credit rating either.

Why did you do this? Did you just want something for free? Seems like stealing to me.

I did not steal them, I signed up and forgot to buy the 1 or 2 cd's. I moved a couple of times and they were sending the notices to an old address. When they finally sent a notice to the right address it was from a collection agency. The letters stopped after a while

If its Blockbusters, just call then and tell them you turned it in, and you don't know why you are being charged. They could have made a mistake. They will just write it off, it's no big deal.

If anyone is wondering why the price is so high on a movie that they think didn't get returned.

I have a friend that is a store manager of one of the big names and they charge for lost revenue that the movie could have gotten if it was there to be rented.

Go to the store & talk to someone in person. Tell them that you know you returned it. If they won't stop it from going to collections, tell them you will file a suit in small claims court. If it does go to collections, you have 30 days to dispute the debt (federal law). THEY HAVE TO PROVE YOU DID NOT RETURN IT, which is impossible due to the night depository.

Just offer to give the owner a handjob and get it over with.

Send them a written letter stating when you returned it, and that you dispute the bill. When they go to collections, do the same thing. In your written letter, ask them not to call you. That last thing is very important. Nothing is worse than getting called at 9am once a week and talking to some moron.

If you tell them in writing that 1. you dispute the claim, and 2. they cannot call you, they will probably give up on the claim. Writing this letter seems like a hassle. I recently had a dispute with a wireless company, and thought I could "resolve" it on telephone. I wasted hours and was aggravated continuously. One letter and then "Poof!"

The fair debt collection act is good for something.
