This a question for the Vegas guys as well as the horse guys or old time ticket brokers who needed to keep short term records. What are slips? All have heard the phrase running numbers from the old days what does that really mean? How did all keep up? What did you do to get results?

Come on someone has got to know how this stuff worked or has a story, right. Like for instance how did they decide what the numbers were for the day? I have heard they would use the pick three at the track. The horses numbers that won in like the 4-6th race was how they did it. Is that true?
I heard there were other methods. Does anyone remeber?

Sugarbear.

I was Neva a horse guy in LV. But have wrote many horse bets in my life.
Old Bookmaker told me long long ago. That Anyone can win a horse race, but NO one beats the horse races.
He also told me that to book horses, All you need is a Big Chief Notebook and a Pencil.
The ONLY horse guy that i know is a guy named Larry Speck, he is Winner BIG time to the horse game in his life.

I was in Ireland three weeks ago, walked into a bookie's, took a horse and a price of a board, wrote my own 200 euro slip, handed it to the girl with the cash and watched the race on a 27" inch telly.

This was three weeks ago. These guys take action up to a Max payout of 100,000 euro !

Started out HANDwriting tickets at the old Castaways in 1986 and also HAND grading winning tickets as a cashier which is no easy task quite frankly considering one has to figure out all teasers and parlays(with all natural fits) and always dealing with the possible ticket that is forged or altered by the patron.

All the above was made much harder because of the noise and smoke in the place that was almost constant.

Anybody that worked at the Castaways Sportsbook for 1+ years had an instant edge in the industry because of the high standards, cortesy, and bookmaking lessons Sonny Reizner extended to everybody on a daily basis that worked there and is evident by the many diciples that were spawned from there over the years into the industry.

Often wonder how many of todays current ticket writers/cashiers could write or cash by hand..........very few I would imagine.

Bobby Davis, Fish is off Sonnys line and I am off a split Booby Davis/Robert Walker line. You are a 1000 percent correct on the high standards and proffessionalism. Those lessons and role models stay with you a long time.
