The save is the most deceiving stat in the game even more so when its a 3 run lead going into the bottom of the 9th. There should be an added stat telling how many one run saves a pitcher has that is the true test of a closer. You know in a 1 run game with Riveria on the mound its over. How many other closers can you say that about.

Tha actual save has evolved into a somewhat deceptive term...most saves were just that prior to Tony Larussa reinventing the closer role.

The save was just that back then...a reliever usually didn't come in to start an inning, he was thrown into the fire, usually the tying and go ahead runs were either on base or at the plate, not the 4th guy up.

Exactly just a truer sign of the effectiveness of a closer. This had no bearing on the sharp vs sqaure gambling debate as the steak eating man across the pond interjected. Atleast it wasnt intented as such just strictly a baseball question. How many of Lidge's save for example are with a 3 run lead. How impressive is that? A one run save is much more impressive.
