Am i reading this wrong or does Sportsline really say that Berkman's getting intentionally walked with a man on first and one out in the bottom of the 10th?

umm...what? how does this make any sense at all?

berkman doesnt run particularly well, you're going to put the GAME WINNING RUN in scoring position with Ensberg up?" and berkman's 0-4 already? he's only hitting .333 this season, its not like berk's hitting .800

even if this works out, which i hope it does cause i'm on LAA, this to me is absolutely absurd. Berkman's no HR threat like Bonds is

im sure he has his reasons. maybe they got a good scouting report on ensberg, and the reliever at the times best pitch matches up well against ensberg and they can induce the groundball....who knows

its definitely not normal, but im sure there was a method to the madness

dude i dont care what hte method is, you put the GAME WINNING RUN in SCORING POSITION with only one out. if htere was 2 outs i might agree 5%. To me this would have been the most questioned managerial decision of the season thus far if it didn't pan out.

honestly i don't think theres any way to ratoinalize this decision, unless maybe Berk is 10-10 with 20 RBIs vs. the guy...in which case u bring in another pitcher, so u don't risk a RISP

not saying i disagree with you...just saying im sure there was a reason other than "one swing of berkman's bat and its over"

MLB reported it as 2 pitchouts followed by IBB...didn't watch the game, can anyone confirm whether they pitched out twice (with speedy Taveras on the bases, no surprise) then decided to walk Berkman instead of face him at 2-0?

who was the runner on 1st by the way? Im sure that played a factor...meaning...probably was a below average runner who didnt have a chance of scoring on a basehit...

if they intentionally walked berkman, and they had a plus runner on 1st base, and put a plus runner in scoring position....even worse move....just trying to see where this guy was coming from

I would agree, Dsethi.

There is absolutely NO logic whatsoever to this decision, if they did give him an IBB. I don't care who is at the plate, but to put a runner in scoring position with 1 out is JUST PLAIN STUPID!!! All it takes is 1 hit. And we saw today where a .100 hitter (Dan Johnson) stroked a double into the gap to tie the Rangers game.

I've just been amazed while watching these games, at how fucking stupid some of these managers are

that would potentially make sense...but kind of dumb...the whole reason of pitching out is to prevent that runner from getting in scoring position...they made 2 pitches and then just conceded it to him?

pitcher was a lefty or righty? berkman is a lefty if im not mistaken

I've been watching.

3 straight pitchouts by the Dodgers.

Then we threw one with the catcher sitting for ball 4 way outside.

Consider it an unintentional intentional walk. it paid off - berkman didn't have time to take out Kent at second, double play worked nicely, better than Tavarez bearing down to second.

Pitcher was a righty.

Berkman is a switch hitter, batting lefty.

Speedy Taveras on 1st.

So you have 2nd baseman cheated towards the bag at 2nd base to cover for a steal, and double play depth anyway. And you have the first baseman covering the runner at first, so you have a gaping hole on the right side of your infield vs. a good left handed hitter.

Two pitchouts. Count is 2-0.

So you have righty pitcher, vs. lefty hitter with power to the gaps and a gaping 4-hole. Double scores Taveras from first. And a ground ball to the 4hole may be run rabbit run for Taveras. Ground ball to the right side, and Taveras goes to 3rd base, with 1 out, so a sacfly scores him.

Ensberg on deck. Righty/righty matchup and a fresh count. Coupled with the potential fictional scouting report on Ensberg rolling over breaking balls low in the zone. Coupled with a smaller hole on the left side of the infield because the 3rd baseman can cheat over. [(He's not playing the line (no doubles) so anything hit down the line will score him anyway, so he's cheating towards the 6 hole.)]

You also have Berkman less likely to break up a double play at 2nd, Taveras may be able to get there with his speed and disrupt the turn.

Picture is getting a bit clearer. But I still dont think I would of done it. Id cheat my RF a bit to the left to protect from a 4 hole groundball and bring him in a bit to protect from Taveras advancing to 3rd on a 4 hole basehit. I'd unintentionally, intentionally walk Berkman, and throw him all breaking balls, because hes sitting dead red.

picture gets clearer yes, still wouldnt have done it like you siad.
the 2 pitchouts consecutively concede the walk, unless on the off chance tavarez is stealing.
either way it worked out, thats why the game's still going on...
