Folks, I think its time to get this thread started as this is a match I have been waiting a long time to see. Phonebook started a thread about the match being shown here in Costa Rica on tv so I thought I might as well get my pick in advance.
I feel very strongly about this match. And interestingly enough it goes against everything I have always thought. My "history" if you will is this. I never have liked De la Hoya, I have always liked Ricky Mayorga but the ride stops here. In fact, if you pull up a search regarding Mayorga you will see Ive been right several times with him here on the Rx, including his first few bouts when he shocked Andrew Six Heads Lewis several years ago at like 5-1 odds. I have posted several other picks regarding Ricky and so far have had his number dialed in. I hope Im right on this one.
Regarding De la Hoya, there is not much else to be said, everyone knows what kind of skilled fighter he is. I really need not add any more. Regarding Ricky, he's a mad man with a strong punch, a punch that can pretty much level anyone. Nonetheless, Mayorga is a boxer in decline.
His last bout was against Michele Piccirillo in 2005, before that he lost to Felix Trinidad, beat Eric Mitchell and lost to Cory Spinks. Where Mayorga has gained momentum the last few years is in the newspapers where he is a constant customer of Nicaraguan daily newspapers. This after being accused of domestic violence, rape, amongst others. He comes from a very poor Nicaraguan family, was trained in Costa Rica and it seems like the fame and money has gotten to his head. He could be a very good fighter if he wanted to but I think he has done his share, made his fortune and is just about ready to give it up. Mayorga has no style, he just enters the ring and swings, if he were a baseball player, he'd be first in strikeouts.
I think "El Matador" is long past his best, and although facing DLH should excite him as it would any other boxer, DLH is too good and is looking to round out his career on a positive note. Mayorga's headlines are no longer put in the sports section, but rather the National News...
