Umm.. You swing away with one of your best power hitters who already had a grand slam earlier in the game, with the 7-8-9 hitters behind him.

Actually, I disagree... Chances are not that great he hits another homerun.

I would rather bunt him to 2nd, then you get 2 chances to get a base hit. I hate the fact that managers refuse to bunt with their big hitters. How many times do we see a power hitter ground into a 4-6-3 DP in a situation like this?

I am thanking them :thumbsup2: I got the Oak/Tex Over 9.5 thanks to the 2 run A's 10th! :suomi: that never would of happened if they bunted and singled.

You're probably right, but a manager being stupid is a FAR stretch from saying the game is "fixed" like the Texas backer is claiming

I was on the over so it worked out great for me.

There is a lot of shit that goes into deciding to bunt, pitcher, who is up next, who is at the plate. Generally speaking power hitters can't bunt for shit and you risk putting him in an 0-2 hole after fouling two bunts off. Then figure out who is up next, are they likely to do what needs to be done to get the runner home? 7-8-9, probably not. Bunting in the AL is less frequent than the NL. For the most part, the grand slam is irrelevant to the equation, I am sure it has more to do with Blalock or Mench (forget who was up) inability to bunt.

It has nothing to do with throwing games though

But my point is that they SHOULD work on bunting... I agree that they can't bunt, but that should change.

Baseball is their job, so you mean to tell me that these power hitters can't practice bunting for 15 minutes every day?

In the late innings in a close game, I think you always need to bunt the guy over, AL or NL. Sure, we see some homeruns in that situation. But more often than not, we see the power hitter get out (strike out or hit into a DP), and now you've got 1 out with the guy still on 1st (or 2 outs with no one on base).

Wasn't there a guy around here in the 1st week of the season that thought the Yankees-Oakland game was fixed because Joe Torre didn't bring in Rivera in the 8th..

I don't disagree College Fan, but having played college ball, I can assure you that most guys mail it in when they practice bunting. Take BP, lay down 2 or 3 bunts before taking hacks and that is the end of it. Most of these guys never bunt growing up and if they are power hitters once drafted, they don't do it then either. I was asked to bunt once in all the games I played, and that included fall and spring ball in college and two summer leagues many summers.

They should have had him bunt until he got one strike, and then hack.

that's baseball....you never know what strategy a manager is going to use on any given day in any situation....same situation tomorrow and he's liable to pinch hit for the slugger ....
