Pari-mutual betting, the standard form of wagering on horses, was invented in France in 1865.

It made its first American appearance in 1871 at New York's Jerome Park.

It became an established feature of horse racing when it was successfully used in the 1908 KENTUCKY DERBY.

Now you know.....THE REST OF THE STORY.

The great race tracks around the country were at least three quarters full on the weekends. Now, they are ghost towns except on big racing event days.
