It seems they don't pull the goalie late in a game, when down a goal. Why is it done in hockey, but not soccer, or is it done in soccer ?

You can't possibly use a substitution because you only get three in a game. If you sub for the goalie with a forward, you have to sub back another goalie if you score - which means you can (at that time) only have used 1 of 3 subs because you need 2 subs in hand to pull that off.

No coach would have used only 1 of 3 subs in the last minute if he was down a goal. You always want fresh legs, so a team would have used at least two subs (and maybe all 3 subs) by the 80th minute.

As for having the goalie go forward, that has happened before but it really depends on the goalie's skill level.

Basically what cincy said plus the clock doesnt stop so late in a game the last thing you wanna do is kill time in making a switch cause you wont get that time back in extra time. During the 2002 world cup Portugal was down a man to South Korea and they were down 1-0 and Portugal needed a tie to advance to the second round. The last 15 mins the goalie was playing in the midfield when Portugal was in the box and during corner kicks the goalie was in the box hoping to score. Sadly they did not. Man that was a rough day for me.

Yes, I meant the goalie coming out of net, like in hockey, not subbing for him.

It happens all the time but usually only in the final 90 seconds when trailing by one goal.

I don't watch soccer, doubt it's on very much in US. How often does the team down a goal score with the "powerplay" ? How often is there an empty-net goal ?

having a golaie out of goal wouldnt gain you anything. sure you may have an extra man down field but there is no advantage to it. soccer is a game of positioning . the field is so big that a man in proper position can guard a great amount of space. does that make siense? id have a hay day if a goalie came out cuz you cant out run the ball and the other team could pass quickly when they stole the ball and shoot from 40 yards out with no goalie. it just has no advantage basicly. to big a field

Every now and then you see a goalie scoring a last minute goal on a corner kick. I remember being at a game in Mexico and having a goalie famous for his relative offensive skills heading one in to tie it up, but then he got beat with a shot about 90 seconds later and lost the game.

As for the "man advantage" it isn't that rare, with a red card team goes down a man. Its definitely a plus, but teams don't necessarily dominate with it. When it gets to 2 or 3 men, then you start seeing teams able to really dictate the game. That doesn't happen too often except very near the end of games.

During league matches, you won't see the goalie come up too often because the first tiebreaker if teams are tied in points at the end of the year is goal differential. It's a lot more common to see the goalie come up during cup matches, particularly on corner kicks.

That was a great game. If I remember right, Portugal was actually 2 men down and hit the post twice. Fun game to watch.
