CINCINNATI +1.00 over Houston
Let’s see if we have this straight. The Reds own the leagues best record at 17-7, they’ve won six in a row, they’re at home and they’re the pooch in this one? We don’t think so. Sure, Taylor Buchholz looks like the second coming of Sandy Koufax but the rookie has two starts in his career against the Brewers and the Pirates and that’s not exactly the cream of the crop. American Ballpark is a hitter’s paradise and the Reds are seeing beach balls at the moment. In addition, Cincinnati has a rookie pitcher going too, who looked brilliant in his debut, throwing seven rock solid innings and allowing just six hits and two earned runs. The best thing about Elizardo Ramirez is that the kid throws strikes and in fact, walked just one in his debut and before being called up he walked just one batter in 20 innings at the Triple-A level while striking out 20 over that same span. The Reds are playing too good to ignore as a dog, especially at home. Play: Cincinnati +1.00 (Risking 1.5 units).

Washington +1.84 over ST. LOUIS
No pitcher in the history of Coors Field will ever tell you that pitching in Colorado helped their career. Don’t pay much attention to Zach Day’s numbers this season. He pitched two games at Coors and was smoked to the tune of 18 hits and 13 earned runs in 6.2 innings of work covering two starts before being released by the Rockies. However, he pitched one game away from Coors and allowed just four hits in seven frames and did not give up a single jack in that game. Don’t get us wrong, Zach Day is an average pitcher at best but he’s nowhere near as bad as his numbers indicate and he’s not even close to being that much worse than the Cards Jeff Suppan. Suppan has played for seven teams in 10 years and has been cut loose twice by the Royals; enough said. His ERA this year is close to six in three starts and while the Nationals aren’t exactly setting the world on fire, this invader has too much talent to keep playing at a .333 clip. Keep your eye on the Nationals, this team is getting tremendous value and will continue to do so until they turn it around, which won’t be long. Take advantage now of these big prices on the Nats. Besides, Jeff Suppan should never be this high a price over anyone not named the Marlins. Play: Washington +1.84 (Risking 1.5 units).

Texas +1.21 over CLEVELAND
The knock on the Rangers starter today, Vincente Padilla, is that his concentration level waivers at times and that was his downfall when he pitched for then Phillies. However, scouts and hitters alike agree that Padilla has some of the nastiest stuff in the business and he may have found a home in Texas, where run support is seldom an issue. Remember, Padilla is making 4½ million a year and that’s rather significant for a guy that hasn’t made a name for himself in seven years in the big leagues. That could all change this year, where Padilla has impressed thus far with a 2-1 record and a 3.64 ERA and it’s also worth noting that three of his five starts has been at the Ballpark in Arlington, arguably one of the best hitters park in the majors. The opposition is hitting just .258 against Padilla. Meanwhile, Jake Westbrook comes in with a 5.52 ERA and has already surrendered 18 earned runs in 29 innings of work. The Rangers are always tough to beat because of their potent offense and when they have a quality starter going you can double that. Play: Texas +1.21 (Risking 1.5 units).
