Tim Duncan gives you the best chance of winning a ring year in and year out - Kobe or Lebron can be the best player - Nash can be the most valuable - but ask 10 GM's at the begining of the season if they can have any one player on their team and ALL ten will say Duncan.

Kobe has rings because he played with a prime Shaq and the Spurs still took two rings away from them - as usual, all these playground players are fading out of the playoffs and we'll be seeing Duncan go for his 4th ring - how many rings do all of these MVP's of the playground have putting Bryant aside because he played with Shaq and it was Shaq's team? I'll answer for you - NONE - Duncan plays team basketball like the Pistons played and like Bird played - you guys should check out your local courts they have some great hustle games going on.

Kobe & Shaq on the same team had a few rings,
plus a shot at another.

I always thought Shaq and Duncan were the same in terms of winning it all - you could take either one and have the same chance - that changed this year but over the years every GM would take Shaq or Duncan to build a team with.

This championship argument to determine a player's greatness is always flawed. Some players just don't get to play in a good organization thus don't get the same chances as others.

How does Duncan play "team basketball" as compared to other MVP candidates who don't? You replace Kobe or Lebron with Duncan and those teams aren't winning the championship.

Duncan is not solely responsible for the Spurs success. San Antonio is stacked, they have arguably the best talent (top to bottom) in the league.

ESPN put out a good article about what should determine an MVP, it is a good read, but their determining factors were

1. Ten years from now, who will be the first player from this season that pops into my head?

2. In a giant pickup game with every NBA player waiting to play, and two fans forced to pick sides with their lives depending on the outcome of the game (I think this is how the annual Rucker League tournament works), who would be the first player picked based on the way everyone played that season?

3. If you replaced every MVP candidate with a decent player at their position for the entire season, what would be the effect on their teams' records?

Here is the article:http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060414
