story just broke.

Tiger Woods' father, Earl, died Wednesday, losing his battle with cancer.

Earl Woods first was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998, but the cancer returned in 2004 and spread to other parts of his body. He has not seen his son play since Woods won his Target World Challenge in December 2004 at Sherwood Country Club.

"My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply," Tiger Woods said in a statement on his Web site. "I wouldn't be where I am today without him, and I'm honored to continue his legacy of sharing and caring."

He went to Augusta, Ga., for the Masters last year, but never made it to the course. Woods broke down in tears after winning his fourth green jacket in a playoff.

"Every year that I've been lucky enough to win this tournament, my dad's been there to give me a big hug. And today, he wasn't there," Woods said. "I can't wait to get home and see him, and give him a big bear hug."

Earl Woods' health was said to be deteriorating over the holidays, and he was not strong enough to attend the grand opening Feb. 10 of the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, Calif. Woods said he spoke to his father the night before the opening, and "he kept telling me how proud he was of what I was able to do, and proud of me for thinking of this. It's hard on all of us."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Hopefully, Tiger will win the remainder of the majors this year.

He had many good years of seeing his son grow and become the best golfer in the world. And classy enough to step aside when Tiger was ready. RIP Earl Woods! My condolences to the friends and family!

Sad news indeed. Just heard about it myself.

Sounds to me like a father who did an incredible job of raising his son. I only hope I can do half the job he did.

On Tiger's "Hello, World" day at the Milwaukee Open, his father was full of outlandish declarations. Given a choice, he said, he would not have fathered another child at 43. (Earl already had three children from a previous marriage.) But Kultida's Thai culture necessitated a pregnancy, "and I don't shoot blanks," Earl said.

Tiger's business was in good order, Earl said. He had no concerns on that score. "I used Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as an example when Tiger was growing up. I told Tiger what a smart guy, what a good guy, Kareem was. But he didn't pay enough attention to his finances, and it cost him. I was the one who set up Tiger's financial empire -- I'm proud of that -- but I wasn't even in the room when he signed the first contract with Nike. That was intentional." Later, after signing the first of the many million-dollar contracts, Tiger came to Earl and said, "I need $300, Dad, for the entry fee." "I looked at Tiger and said, 'Will it never end?' We both laughed. 'Thanks, Pop,' he said."

Hard to believe that's the same Tiger I watched on 60 minutes a few weeks ago who is as tight as a roll of dimes now. He donates all the endorsement money and only keeps what he earns from the tour.

I almost feel like Earl's passing is like my own father passing. I'm a mere spectator at best, but watching Tiger's career since he beat Trip Kuehne in the '95 U.S. amateur in a dueling match until now has been like watching the "Truman Show" I admit I cried when I heard the news.
