as far as i know, all currency is still legal tender. if you had a 1,000 dollar bill you could take it to wal-mart (or anywhere) and spend it.

Does everyone remember that story awhile ago where the woman tried to pass a $1 million bill at wal-mart? She actually wanted change as well!!

Of course she got arrested.

What idiots these days.

Didn't you guys hear the story about Bill Gates? He bought a $1000 bill and then took it to some fast food place just to try to impress the girls as he collected his change. At that point he knew he just had to be a billionaire I am sure.

Mmmm not quite:

Currency notes of denominations above $100 are not available from the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve System, or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. On July 14, 1969, the Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System announced that currency notes in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 would be discontinued immediately due to lack of use. Although they were issued until 1969, they were last printed in 1945.

These notes are legal tender and may be found in circulation today; however, most notes still in circulation are probably in the hands of private numismatic dealers and collectors. If you are interested in purchasing these larger denominations, it is suggested that you contact private dealers or collectors who are usually listed in the classified section of the telephone directory under the headings of “Coins” and “Hobbies.”

Sometime soon the Treasury is going to have to print bigger bills again. I know they keep it to $100 just to prevent money laundering and illegal activity, but it won't be long until $100s will be like $20s were to a generation ago.

I tried to use 4 of those stupid coins during the 2005 NCAA basketball tournament at the ice cream place near the Bally's sportsbook. The 3 kids working there all stared at them like I was trying to pass off fake money. They eventually believed me and took those coins. In all places, the money capital of the world. Can't the monorail machines be built to dispence cash? Probably a marginal increase in cost.
