Sutcliffe issued this statement: "I appreciate the opportunity to address the situation that occurred last night in San Diego. While spending a week off in California, I planned a day of golf and attendance at a ball game as a fan with friends. I want to assure everyone that I was not drinking and driving. Towards the end of a long day on the golf course and evening at the game, I made a brief visit to my former co-workers in the Padres television broadcast booth.

"I was offered the opportunity to make a guest appearance on the air. At that time, I exercised bad judgment and accepted, even though I was not in optimum condition to go on live television. I regret that lapse in judgment and my decision and I sincerely apologize," he said.

I think he is now my favorite broadcaster. No spin, just tellin' it like it is. I exercised bad judgement AND ACCEPTED, I was not in OPTIMUM CONDITION, I didn't drink AND DRIVE,

Truth....such a rare commodity

I played in a celebrity pro am in Mesa, Az a few years back. Didn't play with him but partied with him after the tournament in the clubhouse.

End of the night he screwed one of the servers in the ladies bathroom. The man likes to party.

Sutcliffe is a loser!! Made a big ass of himself, I will laugh if he gets axed, I doubt it, but he is an idiot. I met a lot of broadcasters at the 2002 world series and Sutcliffe and Joe Morgan where the biggest assholes, probably because Sutcliffe was sober.
Wow he screwed a server, i'm impressed:missingte

When Sut was broadcasting with the Padres, the fans were going to be down on him from the start bc of his Cubs ties. He crushed the Pads in G1 on the 84 NLCS, even homering (twice?), but the Padres got the best of him to win the series.

When I heard him broadcasting with the team, I thought to myself, I learn something about pitching from this guy on every broadcast. This was before I heard fans locally starting to bash him. Then I hear most fans say he is terrible, they think he sucks and he doesn't know what he is talking about. I was in the minority big time on this one.

He then was hired away by ESPN. And still it seems to me that he is a way-above average analyst, but it would still seem that most fans disagree.

He also worked with the Padres major and minor league pitchers on the side. He was not a paid coach, in my understanding.

What would you expect from your average Padre fan (which of course I am). San Diego has some of the biggest homer broadcasters in sports. Hank Bauer is the worst to listen to.
