Seems like their are more 100 mph guys this year than in years past. Much like the 300 lb lineman was rare in the NFL a decade ago, may be come alot more common in the future.

What was the highest MPH you have seen from a pitcher? I have seen Justin Verlander hit 101 a few times this year. I know this can be a little misleading and inconsistent and they didn't show radar guns back in the day. But still wondering what was the highest MPH you have seen?

Has anyone seen a 102 mph or higher radar reading (consistently). I don't recall seeing one.

J.R. Richard was the hardest thrower I remember watching. This was back in the late '70's but I know he cracked 100 with his fastball, he also had a slider that was in the 90s . I think there was an all star game where he was clocked over 100 a few times and struck out Reggie Jackson. It didn't get as much press as that at-bat where John Kruk faced Randy Johnson but I think J.R. threw harder and was more intimidating.

Wagner had often hit around 100-102. Getting 99-100 consistanly.

Last year when would come in and pitch to close a game, half the stadium would watch the MPH sign in right field, watching it get closer and closer to 100mph with each pitch...usually took him about 7 or 8 pitches to hit the 100, and sometimes higher mark, and the place would go nuts...it was fun, but now he is a stinkin Met....:pucking:

Poor JR. Was pitching better then anyone I've ever seen and then has a stroke. He was great.

trying to find proof of how hard a guy was clocked is hard, but here is something I found on Sporting News:

In '78, he (Richard) was 18-11 with a 3.11 ERA, 275 1/3 innings pitched and 16 complete games. His opponents batting average was a minuscule, league-best .196, and he compiled a league-high 303 strikeouts. He became the first National League righthander to ever eclipse the 300-strikeout mark. With his 6-8, 240-pound frame and a blistering fastball which frequently exceeded 100 mph, Richard was feared across the National League.

the Tigers have 2 rookie pitchers (Zumaya, Verlander) who throw 100 mph's.

I am wondering if the guns aren't slightly geared to show higher readings, it was unheard of (100 MPH) pretty much was not possible...back in the 80's when the gun really became well known to fans, they use to say there was a slow gun and a fast gun, the slow gun being the real reading.

I remember seeing Tom Henke warming up for a save out by the bullpen, I must have been 30 feet from him, it was amazing to see the gas this guy was bringing.

I think Billy Wagner throws harder consistently than anyone today, but only for one, two innings.

And of course Nolan Ryan was the alltime flame thrower, who could throw high 90's in his 40's in the 8th inning.
