Why do seniors get discounts when they have the most money

Not trying to sound cold-hearted but something that really irrates me is when i goto Mcdonald's and the elderly person in front of me tells the miniumum wage worker that "They would like the senior coffee."

I have never understood this logic. Most young adults(18-25) should get a discount, they are the poorest age group alive.

Most elderly people I know have a TON of money. Now I know there are some cases out there wher this not true but I would be willing to bet that that they have a net worth than any age group.

In Arizona people aged 65 and over don't have to pay the state income taxes that everyone else does. Call it "senior welfare."

A lot of seniors are extremely tight with $$$. They'll go somewhere with a discount just for the discount.

First of all not all seniors have a lot of money.

Many are retired and have time on their hands, so a senior discount brings them to businesses that offer the discount. Movie theatres that are almost empty during the early afternoon shows attrack the seniors into their theatres. Using your McDonalds example, I'm sure that the person ordering the senior coffee also probably had and egg McMuffin as well as hash brown. There is a ten time markup on coffee, so don't cry for MCD's! Same thing with the potatoes that they are paying full price for. That's why they offer those 39c and 49c burgers. They realize that you'll most likely buy the soda and fries to go along with the burger. Those are two high mark up items!

I'm not for anyone getting a free ride really except for veterans and seniors of which I am neither. You serve your country then I say hell yes. As far as seniors I view them as they as they do in non-American culture, they are valued and respected.

Seniors "earned" their money back when a dollar was not the same as it is today...

Most are also not able to go out and get another job at the stage in their lives when they are officially "senior citizens".
